Leading up to the fight, Eye (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) was seen as an underdog by some due to a perceived size disadvantage, but she proved doubters wrong by holding her own with Kaufman (16-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in the clinch.
In the opening minutes of Round 2, Kaufman was the aggressor, and she mixed up her strikes with punches and knees in the clinch. Kaufman knocked Eye off-balance with a right hook in the final round and she kept the pressure on with more punches as time ticked down.
While best known for her elite boxing skills, Holm has worn down each of her five MMA opponents to date with powerful kicks to the legs and body.
In Round 2, Holm rocked Knudsen early on with head kicks and a wounded Knudsen tried to keep her distance.
Critics of Holm have asserted that her three opponents this year have been vastly outmatched, but with most of MMA’s top female bantamweights currently signed with the UFC or Invicta FC, regional promotions have limited options when seeking women who are willing to step into the cage to face the Albuquerque native. Former Tuff-N-Uff amateur champion Ashlee Evans-Smith (2-0) put on what was clearly the best performance of her career on Oct.
In the championship final, Evans-Smith was an overwhelming fan favorite against Fox, and the All-American wrestler got off to an excellent start by taking Fox down into side control mere seconds into the fight. Gonzalez and Casey traded some hard shots on the feet early in the title fight until Casey took the action to the ground.
Gonzalez secured a takedown early in Round 3 and she struck from the top with short elbows. Former Invicta FC prospects Pennington and Duke engaged in a thrilling fight that left both women with war wounds and thousands of new fans after 15 minutes of action. Duke landed more punches and body kicks in the second round, but Pennington bloodied her nose with a counter combination. Duke opened the action with a combination in Round 3 and Pennington backed her up once again with a counter flurry. Rounding out the Deep Jewels 2 card thus far, the aforementioned Naho Sugiyama (8-3) looks to put an end to a three-fight losing streak when she takes on 10-year veteran Masako Yoshida (17-18-5), who scored a big win at Deep Jewels 1. Honchak (8-2) became Invicta FC’s first 125-pound champion in April when she earned a five-round unanimous decision victory over Vanessa Porto.
Invicta FC has booked two additional 115-pound bouts for December and both have potential title implications.
After pouring more than $12,600,000 into the city of Curitiba, UFC 198 was more profitable than Rock in Rio, local paper Gazeta do Povo reported based on a study requested by the City Hall. Conor McGregor’s spat with the UFC that ultimately tanked his planned UFC 200 main event rematch with Nate Diaz dominated the MMA news cycle for weeks.
Breno Brigido will make his professional MMA debut tonight at Shooto Brazil 63, but he’s no stranger to high-level MMA.
Kheyfets (5-0 MMA, 4-0 XFC) looked to close the distance after early leg kicks and knees from Clark (4-2 MMA, 0-1 XFC), but Clark landed another knee and broke free of a clinch.
Not to be deterred, Kheyfets began to mix up her strikes midway through the round and had much greater success with kicks to the body. Late in the closely contested round, Clark scored a takedown that would prove to be her undoing. While Clark’s counterstriking and late takedown looked to have been enough to narrowly win the first round, she was denied the opportunity to fight on when the cageside physician deemed her unfit to continue due to the eye injury. Cummins and Frausto faced off in the first sanctioned professional women’s bout in West Virginia history.
Cummins took control of the fight early on with punches and a takedown, but Frausto showcased her improving jiu-jitsu skills with a series of armbar attempts.
Between rounds, cageside officials realized that the first round had erroneously been contested over three minutes as opposed to the scheduled five.
With the fight still seemingly up for grabs heading into the third and final round, Cummins had success with an early takedown and effective ground and pound. All three judges awarded the close first round to Cummins, who walked away with a hard-fought unanimous-decision victory with scores of 29-27 across the board.
At the start of the brief bout, Saraykina scored first with punches, but Kunitskaya responded by taking her down and quickly moved to side control. The fighters were stood up, and Kunitskaya immediately caught a body kick and took Saraykina back down. Brazil’s first all-female MMA promotion, Pink Fight MMA, staged its inaugural event on Jan. On the strength of takedowns and ground and pound, Kalindra Carvalho Faria (3-3-1) defeated Maria Elisabete Tavares (4-3-1) via unanimous decision in the night’s main event.
In one of two last-minute additions to the card, Jennifer Maia (5-1-1) rebounded from her first pro loss by submitting Tatiane Aguiar (0-1) with an armbar at the 1:17 mark of round two. Kyoko Kimura (1-0-1) and Mizuho Sato (6-5-1) fought to an uninspiring unanimous draw (20-20, 20-20, 19-19) at Pancrase Progress Tour 1 on Jan. Munah Holland (3-1) defeated Pearl Gonzalez (0-1) by majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29) in a hotly contested bout at Ring of Combat 39 on Feb. After a three-fight winning streak in 2014, Jorge Masvidal hit a rough patch in 2015, dropping two of three bouts. Corey Anderson said he knew the decision wouldn’t be going in his favor before the scorecards were read at UFC 198. Taking on a streaking fighter fans feel may be the future of the featherweight division is nothing new to Ricardo Lamas. A 115-pound women’s bout between season-four tournament veterans Jessica Aguilar (11-4 MMA, 2-1 BFC) and Lisa Ellis-Ward (14-6 MMA, 2-1 BFC) has been promoted to the main card of Bellator 58, which take place Saturday at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
Fans today gave the women 60 percent of the vote when Bellator put the final main-card spot up for grabs via Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney’s Twitter account. Aguilar and Ellis-Ward meet for the second time after a bout five years ago in which Ellis-Ward submitted the then-newcomer with an armbar. Ellis-Ward is 2-1 in Bellator after a first-round submission loss to Megumi Fujii in September. Ronda Rousey has yet to compete at UFC 193, but she already has her post-fight plans laid out.
Ahead on the scorecards going into the final round, Holm said she lost some focus and somewhat let her guard down. Holm has suffered losses in the past, but never in MMA and never when victory was so close.
Holm said she’s not dwelling on her decision, though, and while Rousey could still be on the radar for a future bout, her sights are on Tate.
Holm said she plans to take a short vacation and will then be right back in the gym at her longtime training home of Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque, N.M. UFC officials are currently seeking an opponent for women’s bantamweight Lauren Murphy (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC), as injury has forced Sarah Moras (4-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) to withdraw from a planned meeting at UFC Fight Night 83. MMAjunkie today learned of the opening on the card from a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to publicly discuss such matters.
Meanwhile, Murphy finds herself in a bit of a must-win situation, as she came to the UFC with a perfect career mark but has since suffered back-to-back decision losses to Liz Carmouche and Sara McMann. Remember that time Holly Holm got a shot at Ronda Rousey instead of Miesha Tate because we’d already seen Rousey-Tate twice? Unbeaten UFC women’s bantamweight contender Cat Zingano will be shelved for just a while longer than expected, but still hopes to return in the first half of 2014.
Zingano (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) on Thursday underwent a type of stem-cell surgery for an injury on her left knee. And because she has that win over Tate, that’s all the more reason why she hopes to see Rousey retain her title in December. The Colorado-based Zingano has been fighting professionally since 2008 and is undefeated through the first eight appearances of her career. For more on the UFC’s upcoming schedule, stay tuned to the UFC Rumors section of the site. The fighters traded right hands and knees in the opening round and Eye scored with uppercuts in close.
Eye began to incorporate body kicks into her striking attacks, but Kaufman staggered her with another powerful right hand. Veteran official Jon Schorle saw the fight 29-28 for Eye, awarding Rounds 1 and 2 to the Ohioan.
That was no different against Knudsen, who stepped into the fight on short notice and appeared to have no answer for Holm’s attacks on the feet. Holm appeared to sense that the end was near and she hurt Knudsen again with a side kick to the body. Once on the mat, Evans-Smith took Fox’s back and threatened with a rear-naked choke, but Fox was able to escape to her feet. She took Fox back down in the second round and struck from top position as Fox began to tire.
She worked for a triangle choke and remained active with submission attempts throughout the round, but Gonzalez defended well and escaped each time.
Casey used a triangle choke to set up a sweep into mount, but she lost the position in a scramble and Gonzalez countered with a triangle of her own.
The fight was predominantly contested on the feet and Cifers held her own against her more experienced foe.
Duke answered back with knees, but Pennington backed her up with a barrage of punches and put Duke on the defensive.

She put on a strong showing, but ultimately dropped a close unanimous decision to the Canadian.
When Jewels merged with Deep to form Deep Jewels, Ham’s title was carried over and rebranded the Deep Jewels featherweight championship. Inoue defeated Fujino in the pair’s first meeting and she has won four straight MMA bouts. Yukiko Seki (11-23) makes her second appearance for Deep Jewels when she faces the returning Madoka Ebihara (4-3), who competes for the first time in more than four years.
Murphy debuted for Invicta FC on short notice in April and impressed many by defeating Kaitlin Young.
The Scottish star sports a 19-2 record in Muay Thai and she has yet to taste defeat in her MMA career.
Frausto Gurgel’s debut for Invicta FC ended in a competitive decision loss to Jennifer Maia in April. Dinha Wollstaein (1-1) via TKO (punches) at the 36-second mark of Round 1 at Jungle Fight 59 on Oct.
Leticia Santos (0-1) via TKO (punches) at the 1:10 mark of Round 1 at JVT Championship 5 on Oct.
Thaiane Souza (0-2) via submission (guillotine choke) at the 47-second mark of Round 2 at Frederico Fighting Championship 2 on Oct. Michele Angelo (1-1) via submission (armbar) at the 1:29 mark of Round 1 at Jabuka Fight 2 on Oct. Jin Tang (14-4-2) via submission (kneebar) at the 1:57 mark of Round 1 at Real Fight Championship 3 on Oct. Paloma Fabrykant (4-1) via technical submission (armbar) at the 53-second mark of Round 1 at Arrogant MMA on Oct.
Kheyfets walked down Clark with punching combinations, but Clark found a home for her counter-right cross and got the better of the striking exchanges. The abrupt end to the competitive bout was unfortunate, but Kheyfets showed marked improvement in winning her toughest fight to date.
She stayed active on the bottom with elbow strikes as Cummins punched to the head and body. Rather than halt the bout and rule it a no-contest, the fight was allowed to continue on using the abbreviated round lengths.
She slammed Frausto down to the mat and punished her with hard punches and elbows from Frausto’s half-guard. Frausto rolled to her side to defend against the strikes and eventually escaped to her feet. Kunitskaya needed just 65 seconds to dispatch of compatriot Ekaterina Saraykina (0-1), who made her pro debut in the fight. She was active with punches from the top and nearly trapped Tavares in a rear-naked choke and an armbar late in round two.
Maia will have a chance to avenge her lone defeat when she faces Brazilian standout Vanessa Porto (13-4) in a rematch at Pink Fight MMA 2 on Feb. Making matters worse for Masvidal, both of his losses were by narrow and somewhat controversial decision. After all, the 34-year-old has been put in the position over and over again in recent years.
Because of that, she won’t fight again until UFC 200, which is set to take place July 9 in Las Vegas. Save for a point late in the second round when Tate got her opponent’s back and nearly finished with a choke, Holm kept the fight standing and picked her shots with precise striking combinations. That mistake came back to haunt her, and Tate found an opening like she did in the second round.
The former pro boxer fended off Tate for more than 23 minutes only to drop the ball when the contest came down to the wire. It might take Holm a while to lick her wounds after allowing Tate to rally and take the title, but she said the result won’t break her fighting spirit. Zingano has been out since the summer after suffering an injury to her right knee that required surgery. Then, in theory, she’ll be next in line to fight the current champ once both her knees have healed in full. I thought she faked the injury because Dana wanted Miesha to be on TUF against Rhonda derp!!! The popular Ohio native took a hard-fought split decision victory over former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman in a featured bout on the card. She repeatedly found a home for her jab, but Kaufman countered well with more knees to the body. Kaufman swarmed on Eye with punches that forced Eye to clinch in order to buy time to recover. Judge Gino Garcia had it 29-28 for Kaufman, scoring Rounds 2 and 3 for the former Strikeforce champ.
Kaufman, who became the first Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion in February 2010, had her long-awaited UFC debut spoiled by the close decision defeat.
Holm opened the action with knees and punches in the clinch and she began to throw a variety of kicks as the first round progressed. Knudsen retreated to the cage and Holm unloaded with knees until the lopsided fight was waved off at the 1:18 mark of the second round. In the clinch, Fox landed a series of knees that stunned Evans-Smith and forced her to backpedal. In Round 2, Casey knocked out her opponent’s mouthpiece with a right hook, but Gonzalez was unfazed and she promptly took Casey down. However, Clark’s striking combinations, coupled with a takedown and ground and pound in Round 1, propelled her to a unanimous decision win with scores of 30-27 and 29-28 twice.
She attempted a standing guillotine choke, but Pennington fought free and landed a slashing elbow over the top.
More hard punches scored for Pennington later in the round, but Duke stayed on her feet and she landed knees before the bell. She kept her distance and landed more kicks as the round progressed, but Pennington continued to score with punches.
Hill attempted an ill-advised spinning backfist and fell to the mat, and Wootten took advantage by landing strikes from the top for the remainder of the fight en route to victory. The bantamweight bout will stream live online during the preliminary portion of the 12-fight card. Andrade has only been competing professionally for two years, but the 22-year-old has established herself as one of Brazil’s top prospects. The standout striker makes the first defense of her new belt against Numata (5-1-1), who has won four straight fights.
Megumi Sugimoto (1-0) and Sachiko Fujimori (1-0) face off in a battle of highly-touted prospects, and Tamaki Usui (0-0) makes her pro debut against Naomi Taniyama (0-1).
Smith (6-3-1) has fought on all but one of the Invicta FC cards to date and she has tasted defeat only once during her time with the promotion. The two-time All-American wrestler has won four straight fights and she has stopped six opponents to date. Herrig makes her Invicta FC debut on the card after scoring back-to-back wins for Bellator.
On the same card, Porto came up just short in her five-round title fight against Barb Honchak. Evinger recently appeared on TUF 18, but lost to Raquel Pennington in the elimination round.
Ansaroff has been very active and she has earned four stoppage wins during the past 11 months. Former Valkyrie champion Yamaguchi has alternated between wins and losses during her past six fights and now competes outside of Japan for the second time. Gutierrez opened her MMA career with victories in three of her first four fights, but she is currently in the midst of a three-fight losing skid. This bout is a rematch from July when Souza submitted Sattelmayer with a heel hook in just 24 seconds. Yankovich looks to get back on the winning track after suffering a one-sided TKO loss to Miriam Nakamoto at Invicta FC 6. Lopez made her pro debut at Legacy FC 20 in May, but succumbed to an armbar from Paulina Granados in just 46 seconds. Davis looks to begin her climb back towards the atomweight top ten after suffering losses to Lisa Ellis and Stephanie Frausto in her most recent fights. Torquato has won all three of her pro and amateur fights this year and she is coming off of a first-round submission victory earlier this month. Well, how about heading back in time to UFC 194 this past December to check out their first fight? When Clark backed away after a quick flurry, Kheyfets again pressed forward with a head kick and a lunging one-two.
Clark threw punches to the body until the bell sounded, but she began bleeding from below her rapidly-swelling right eye during the rest period. Frausto used an armbar to sweep into top position, but Cummins stood and scored a late takedown.

Some of the strikes strayed to the back of Frausto’s head, and referee Dan Miragliotta brought the fighters back to their feet and deducted one point from Cummins for the foul. She locked on a guillotine choke as Cummins took her down in the final 30 seconds, but Cummins held on until the bell. In the process, Kunitskaya inadvertently landed a series of strikes to the back of Saraykina’s head and was given a warning for the infraction. Kunitskaya, who typically campaigns between 145 and 155 pounds, will give up 50 pounds to Melikhova in the open-weight matchup. The eight-fight card included some of the country’s best prospects, as well as newcomers who were eager to be a part of the historic event. Tavares rallied in the final stanza with a takedown and punches of her own, but the late comeback was not enough, and Faria walked away with her second straight win. Aguilar has won seven of her past eight while Vidonic is unbeaten in her past six after dropping a decision in her pro debut.
Reneau had success early in the bout, but Avila took over in the later rounds to earn the decision in a fight-of-the-night candidate. Holland’s strong final round was enough to convince two of the cageside judges to award her the victory. The bout was part of a massive all-female fight card that included 40 bouts in MMA, boxing, kickboxing and karate. Pena suffered multiple injuries when she was struck by a drunk driver while walking on a sidewalk, and a timetable for her return is currently unknown. Tweet has suffered quick defeats in each of her first two pro bouts and faces another tough test in Montana’s Weinberger, who brings an 8-0 amateur record into her pro debut. Branco brings a solid background in jiu-jitsu into her debut while Markos joins the pro ranks after a 5-1-1 stint as an amateur.
Jared Hess (11-3-1 MMA, 4-3 BFC) and bantamweights Farkhad Sharipov (13-4 MMA, 1-1 BFC) vs. It’s a difficult scenario to live with, Holm said, but ultimately she has no regrets. The evening’s main card airs on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. So the question is, after the UFC told us this past fall we didn’t really want to see that fight a third time – at least not then. Do we want to see it now just because the roles are reversed? Miesha Tate, whom Zingano defeated in April, stepped in to fill Zingano’s slot both on the series and in the championship bout. In spite of Kaufman’s dominance in the final round, judge Ruben Najera scored Rounds 1 and 3 for Eye, and that proved to be the difference maker as Eye took a huge split decision victory.
She maintained a positive attitude following the loss, however, and is already looking forward to her next fight.
Evans-Smith battered Fox with punches on the ground en route to a third-round TKO victory in the final of the inaugural CFA women’s featherweight title tournament.
Referee James Warring appeared to be on the verge of stopping the fight on one occasion, but Evans-Smith recovered and scored another takedown just before the bell.
Casey tried for an armbar and she locked on a tight triangle choke before the end of the round, but Gonzalez escaped once again. With nowhere to go, Casey had no choice but to tap out to the hold and Gonzalez was awarded the submission win at the 4:43 mark of Round 3. Duke jabbed and threw a series of kicks as the round progressed, and Pennington fired back with right hooks. Late in the fight, Duke cut Pennington with a knee, and the amazing bout came to an end with both women landing strikes. That loss came via a contentious split decision against former Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman in April.
With eight stoppage wins to her credit, Gadelha has also established herself as a proven finisher. Nakamoto’s first fight for Invicta FC initially ended in a first-round knockout victory over Jessamyn Duke. The popular striker has earned victories in six of her past seven fights, with the lone defeat coming against current Invicta FC champion and now part-time training partner Esparza. Injuries have resulted in a number of last-minute opponent changes for Calderwood thus far, but a win in December could earn her a title shot. Damm overwhelmed Torres Gallegos with punches on the feet and she took the fight to the ground in the opening minute. Toshi was competing for the first time since her submission loss to Nicole Chua at One FC 3 in March 2012. After two competitive rounds on the feet, Nilsson came on strong with a big third round to seal her victory on the scorecards.
At 19 years of age, Moreira Pacheco is currently one of Brazil’s best female prospects. As Moreira tired in the second round, Daimoni took advantage by finishing the fight with a brutal right hook. Juskiewicz stepped into the fight on short notice after her planned bout earlier in the month was canceled. The 17-year-old Reis stepped into the fight on short notice and showcased her slick ground game with the quick submission win.
Bloomfield had early success on the feet, but Pennell secured a takedown and flurried with punches from mount for the TKO stoppage win in her pro debut. Shioda made her return to MMA in the fight following a seven-year hiatus and made short work of Tang. This bout ended in controversy when Castillo applied an armbar in the opening minute and the referee stopped the fight, claiming that Fabrykant had verbally submitted. Vidonic has tasted defeat in five of her past seven fights, but many observers felt that she did enough to defeat Jessica Aguilar in their March rematch at Bellator 94.
Cummins had mixed success in the amateur ranks, but she rebounded from a close decision loss in her pro debut by submitting Maia Kahaunaele in June. Davids went 4-1 in the amateur ranks and she is coming off of a bantamweight title victory in her most recent fight. She continued to throw combinations while Clark stuck to her game plan of counter right hands that landed time and time again. The main event bout will be contested for the first Pink Fight women’s title at 60 kilograms (132 pounds). Lucas has quickly become one of the fastest-rising stars in DEEP and has won both of her fights in the promotion.
And while the upset wasn’t quite as stunning, an upset it was, nonetheless, when she choked out Holm (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in the fifth round (check out the highlights here).
She landed a series of punches from the top until the fight was finally stopped at the 3:15 mark of Round 3. The three-time BJJ world champion made her long-awaited Invicta FC debut in July and scored a third-round TKO victory over previously unbeaten Jewels champ Ayaka Hamasaki. Torres rose to the top of the 115-pound amateur rankings this past year after winning seven fights in a span of ten months. Of Ansaroff’s three career defeats, two came via razor-thin decisions against current Invicta FC champions Carla Esparza and Barb Honchak. From there, Damm mounted her opponent and spun into an armbar that forced Torres Gallegos to verbally submit. Carneiro Lima scored an early takedown and mounted Trolezi, then dropped unanswered left hands until the brief bout was stopped.
Dudieva began to fatigue by Round 2 and she had no answer for Kianzad’s dominance on the ground. Osman started strong in Round 1, but she slowed down as the fight progressed and Lim rallied late with some solid ground and pound to steal the win. She fared well in the striking exchanges, but Katainen scored takedowns in both rounds and she landed big punches from top position in the final seconds to seal the decision victory.
Heintzman compiled a perfect 6-0 record in the amateur ranks and she most recently captured the NAAFS 115-pound women’s title. Tiem returns to action for the first time since she submitted Jazmin Quezada in her pro debut one year ago. Wolfe opened her pro career with a unanimous decision victory in February and now seeks her biggest win to date.
Hotta, a pioneer for women in MMA who made her debut in 1995, returns to competition for the first time in more than 11 years.
Fox was narrowly saved by the bell, though it initially appeared that Evans-Smith had been declared the winner and she celebrated with her team before being told that the fight was still on. The winners of the two semifinal bouts will then face off to crown the first Deep Jewels lightweight champion next year.
Damm has won two of her past three fights in Brazil since she was fined and suspended by the Ohio Athletic Commission in June for falsifying a pre-fight urine test.
