The Reed College Bookstore is a nonprofit, institutionally-owned store dedicated to serving the academic needs of the Reed community. Orientation at Reed is a busy time with many different activities, meetings, information sessions, and social gatherings. Place orders by August 2 to ensure that your books will be ready for pickup when you arrive on campus. During Orientation, parents will have an opportunity to attend the kind of humanities lecture and conference that Reed students experience throughout the year. All first-year students take Humanities 110, a yearlong course that requires the purchase of around 15 books each semester. Hum 110 packages can be preordered here; if you prefer to order your Hum 110 books individually, or want to take an early peek at the books used in other classes at Reed, check out our textbook order page, where you can browse books by course. Disclaimer: While we will try our best to fill the Hum 110 packages as requested with all used or all new books, we may run out of new or used copies of a particular book. All linen orders must be placed by August 2 to guarantee that they are available to you at Orientation. Some students prefer to have a small refrigerator in their dorm room in addition to the communal fridge found in each dorm's common room.
The bookstore stocks software at great educational discounts, saving you up to 60% on certain programs. The Reed bookstore offers a large variety of trade reference titles, including college guides, English and foreign language dictionaries, style guides, as well as all kinds of guides to Portland. When sales at Reed's non-profit bookstore exceed the break-even point, the bookstore reinvests any profit (usually not more than 1 - 2 percent of total sales) back into the Reed community. Your application needs to include the following: name, student ID, an email address and phone number where we can reach you during the summer, as well as a description - not to exceed 500 words - of why you think your financial situation warrants a $250 textbook scholarship and what you have undertaken to ameliorate your financial difficulties. We recommend that you go ahead and order your textbooks before the scholarship awards are announced in order to get first crack at used books.
One of the bookstore services proven to greatly simplify student life is a bookstore charge account.
Reed bookstore gift cards offer another easy way to pay for your student's books, school supplies, and other college essentials without getting her a credit card or sending him checks. One of the biggest mistakes that can me made in green building is the ignorance of the sun. When locating a building on a site for solar, it is vital to keep in mind the path of the sun and it’s relation to the cardinal directions.
Depending on the topography of a site (slopes, embankments, etc.), it can provide pockets of shading and sun protection. Jeremy BastowBoise Green Building ExaminerAs an intern architect, Jeremy is involved daily in the science and design of green buildings and products.

Teacher Externships offer a unique professional development opportunity connecting the classroom to the workplace. In Career Academies teacher externships take on increased meaning as Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers and core academic teachers build the bridge between skills-based and knowledge-based education. For anyone familiar with the theory and practice of Career Academies this falls in line with a common goal, providing a curriculum that combines interest in a career theme, such as arts & media or health, with the requirements needed for college entrance, often through project-based learning. With first-hand exposure, teachers can design and implement classroom activities, projects and work-based learning opportunities that will add relevance and meaning to students' classroom learning. The externship experience offers an avenue for teachers to expand their industry-based knowledge and transfer this to the curriculum. Externships can be particularly powerful for teachers working on an interdisciplinary team, as in a Career Academy. It is our hope that this guide will serve as a reference tool and provide examples for you to engage in a rewarding teacher externship experience.
This planning document is intended to help you begin to plan for a successful externship experience.
What do you hope to get out of the externship experience and how will this translate to your work as a classroom teacher?
This is usually during school breaks, especially over the summer, or perhaps on a fall or spring break. If you do an externship as a release day from work with a substitute, think about who will pay for a substitute, or for your time if it is during non-school days: the school, the externship provider, a grant? Brainstorm businesses, industry, and not-for-profit organizations that would integrate with your classroom. Contact the Human Resources or Public Relations Department if you do not already have a contact person. Please let me take this opportunity to introduce the idea of your company hosting a teacher externship. The teacher externship is designed to expose teachers to careers and work environments so they can work with high school students more effectively. It is useful to have some type of agreement between the externship teacher and those organizing or hosting the externship, such as the district, a Regional Occupation Program, or a Chamber of Commerce, re.

Taking photos of the worksite and employees during a teacher externship often provides a valuable resource for teachers and students once teachers return to the school site. Visit a variety of departments and functions within the company, to obtain a full view of the opportunities available.
Work in a given position for some period of time, under the supervision of someone who can provide orientation and training in that job. Call the host site the day before to confirm the date(s), time(s), arrival location and parking location for your externship.
What should I be teaching in my classroom to prepare students for employment in a company like this? What would you recommend teachers do to strengthen the relevance of school to the workplace? Do you see the local labor markets' need for new workers in your field increasing, decreasing or remaining steady? What, if any, industry certifications do you consider desirable for a prospective employee? What job classifications do you expect to have the greatest demand within the next five years?
What level of education, training, skills, or experiences does an applicant need for an entry-level position? What are some of the core abilities and skills you look for in a new hire for entry-level positions?

What should I be teaching in my classroom to prepare student for employment in a company like this?
Please note the skills and personal qualities you observe during your externship that are necessary for solid job performance.
The Partnership for 21st Century Skills is a national organization that advocates for the integration of skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication into the teaching of core academic subjects such as English, reading or language arts, world languages, arts, mathematics, economics, science, geography, history, government and civics.
The Partnership and our member organizations provide tools and resources that help facilitate and drive this necessary change. Mastery of core subjects and 21st century themes is essential for all students in the 21st century. Learning and innovation skills increasingly are being recognized as those that separate students who are prepared for a more and more complex life and work environments in the 21st century, and those who are not. People in the 21st century live in a technology and media-suffused environment, marked by various characteristics, including: 1) access to an abundance of information, 2) rapid changes in technology tools, and 3) the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale.
Today's life and work environments require far more than thinking skills and content knowledge.

When placing your order online, you will be prompted to set up a web account so our system knows who you are. This year's lecture will be on the Iliad and, much like their students, parents are expected to read the book ahead of time. The bookstore offers a reservation service for these (and other) textbooks: you can order your books anytime during the summer and we'll hold them for you until you arrive for Orientation. You can also use our price comparison tool; while we try to be as competitive as possible, if you do find a lower price, you can purchase the book directly from that vendor without leaving our website.
In these cases, we do substitute new for used and vice versa, so the total amount charged to your student account or credit card may be different than the package price.
Since the dorms open before any of the other Orientation activities start, it is handy to have some basic dorm supplies ready for pick-up right when you arrive on campus so you can do your initial dorm move-in before Orientation really kicks off. Due to popular demand, we are offering a mini fridge for preorder, since they're fairly bulky and hard to transport to campus. We also offer a variety of computer supplies and peripherals such as flash drives, external hard drives, and phone chargers. We offer a selection of these books to first-year students at a 20 percent discount as an Orientation pre-order promotion, but many more titles are available for sale in the bookstore during student Orientation. In that vein, the bookstore is offering 50 textbook scholarships of $250 each for the upcoming academic year, 10 of which are reserved for freshmen. The bookstore staff, in conjunction with the financial aid office, will review all applications and award the scholarships by July 31. Simply charge them to your bookstore account (you may have to set one up if you haven't done so already) since the money will be deposited into this account as soon as the scholarships are awarded. We send emails to all students about important issues such as textbook-returns deadlines or buyback. In most cases it is always easier to shade or block the sun than it is to make room for the sun after construction. InBoise, Idaho, there are moderately hot summers, moderately cold winters, and a temperate spring and fall season.
Building spaces to receive direct benefits of the sun should have access to the south, as this direction allows for the most solar opportunities.

They provide an experience in which teachers spend time in a workplace to learn through direct experience about trends, skill requirements and opportunities in industries related to their subject in order to enrich and strengthen their teaching and bring relevance to student learning. Teachers improve their pedagogical practices by incorporating new methods, labor market information, and employment skills that meet current industry standards. It changes the classroom dynamic when faculty become more like students and see what kind of world their students are entering. Externships provide a fresh perspective that lets teachers tie curriculum to real-world applications. Along with Tenenbaum, a science teacher, one of her colleagues, photography instructor Joan Watanabe, also completed an externship at JPL.
They can inform educators about their expectations of employees in various positions and offer input to the curriculum, thereby contributing to the preparation of their future workforce. Many companies do not have the means to give to their community through financial or equipment donations but are rich in what they can provide in training and experience. Peer-to-peer experiences where educators and adults working in industry share their experiences provide valuable insights into the demands and challenges of education and the modern workplace and make learning more meaningful for students. No two teachers, schools or communities are alike and planning will lead to a richer and more useful experience. In any case having your information written down on a sheet of paper will help you think about what skills and experiences you bring to the experience and what you want to gain from the externship.
As you are probably aware, employer surveys (conducted both locally and nationally) conclude that the majority of entry-level workers lack the basic skills and knowledge needed to be immediately productive in the workplace. I observed a variety of skills and competencies that I plan to implement in my ____________ class. A focus on creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration is essential to prepare students for the future. The account can be used in the bookstore, Homer's Hut (our night-time convenience store) and for online purchases. However, we also offer opt-in bulletins for less crucial information (special promotions, featured items, sales, new arrivals, book reviews, secret sales, etc).
With all that power, it is paramount to make solar orientation one of the first priorities in a building's design for its site. The best solar orientation for a building can literally vary from location to location and should be evaluated accordingly. By this information, it seems appropriate to shade the building envelope from the sun in the summer, but let it in through the windows in the winter.
The north side of a building will generally only get sun during the earliest and latest hours of the summer months and will not see the sun during the winter.
Likewise, vegetation will have an impact as evergreen vegetation will continually provide shade during all months of the year and deciduous vegetation can provide shade in the summer, but allow solar through in the winter when they have lost their foliage. Although, this is hard to control, speculation and planning can be done in order to situate a building for solar access in the case of future adjacent development.
One friend told me and I saw it online another place that you can dissasemble it and wire it back together bypassing the safety switch.
The externship experience helps teachers connect classroom content with students' future career interests and helps students develop both the academic and technical skills required in the world they are preparing to enter.
The educational goal of an externship is to increase a teacher's ability to connect theory and practice and bring an understanding of workplace practices and policies (e.g. While completing an externship at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena she worked alongside preeminent climatologists studying recent changes in sea level and sea ice distribution.
Watanabe worked alongside JPL's Image Processing Lab technicians creating a presentation of the journeys of the two Mars Rovers, which were on the search for water. They can also become guest speakers, mentors, host field trips and job shadows, or offer internships for students. In-kind donations of time and expertise are immensely valuable and provide employers an opportunity to show their commitment to their community. In response to these trends, the (name of your Career Academy) _____________________________________________ is working to increase student achievement and motivation through new teaching and learning strategies. It allows teachers to provide links between the skills and knowledge taught in the classroom and those being used in the workplace so that we can better prepare young people for the workplace ready for the challenges there. They can last anywhere from two days, or the equivalent of sixteen hours, to as much as a 6-8 week summer. I teach (name the class, a unit, a project) ____________________________ and hope to learn more about __________________________________________________.
As a result of my experience with (name of site) ____________________ I will be more successful at helping students understand the connection between the classroom and workplace skills necessary for success.

The most beneficial and impactful green building decisions are those implemented at the earliest possible stages of schematic design; before there is even a floor plan. East and west faces of a building will have a lower angle of solar concentration in the morning and afternoon and will still receive sun in the winter months.
And if you follow the image of that down to where it shows bolts, that is where is passes through and is bolted to firewall. Externships range from a day of job shadowing to longer externships that are usually project-based and can last as long as a full summer. This often leads to activities in which students work in groups, engaging in cooperative learning and open-ended real-life, problem-based assignments. Building on her externship, Wantanabe developed a project useful in digital planetariums: art students instructed science students on imaging techniques and the aesthetics appropriate for planetarium shows. This includes employers, teachers, counselors, parents and the community working more closely together. I understand from (how do you know this - colleague, internet, Chamber of Commerce) that _____________________________________________ (your company) is doing great work in this area. The following form is one example of an agreement with the externship host, but isn't necessarily the best one in every case. Through my externship experience I learned _________________________ and will use this new knowledge help students to be more prepared to transition to college and careers.
Use Reed's bookstore as the hub for your campus needs, including dorm supplies, linens, computer supplies, reference books, and, of course, textbooks. Be assured that we will not mail out your order regardless of what you enter in the ship-to address. Please note that all these lists are managed by Reed College and that it is easy for you to unsubscribe any time. When a building is sited correctly, it will continue to provide opportunities for energy efficiency and conservation. It is very important to be mindful of the east-west axis during the summer months as it can be more difficult to provide shading with the lower sun angle; this can cause problems with overheating and window configurations.
I have seen that happen, the firewall gives from thousands of pushes on the clutch and over time can begin to crack, then finally separate.
Teacher externships offer a professional development experience that is often transformative for educators and their students.
Thus together Tenebaum and Watanabe worked in a state-of-the-art facility at JPL and gained skills and knowledge they were able to translate to their classrooms as interdisciplinary projects for students. For example, California State Senate Bill 974 (Steinberg & Hancock), being considered as this guide goes to press, would establish a new Career Pathways Investment Credit (CPIC) administered by the California Department of Education (CDE) to business entities that partner with local education agencies (LEAs) to develop and support career pathways.
Through the use of innovative curriculum, hands-on real-world projects, and workplace experiences this (name of your Career Academy) __________________________________ seeks to integrate the foundation skills of reading, writing and math with workplace skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork and use of technology in order to prepare all students for college and careers.
Even if you select UPS for the shipping method, we will first check with you to make sure that you really want this order shipped rather than held at the bookstore. These include instructional programs provided by high schools, alternative schools, county offices of education, or other public schools that integrate academic and technical learning to prepare pupils for both postsecondary instruction and careers in high-growth or high-need sectors of the economy.
I would also like to find out about the range, required levels of education, salary ranges, typical workdays, and pros and cons of the jobs there.
Rented books are available at a lower price but must be returned at the end of the semester.
