Every now and then a performer comes along, new to us, and their work resonates so strongly, we feel compelled to feature them ahead of some of those familiar performers we had chosen earlier. I made the trip to the wilds of Westchester to conduct an interview at Terence's apartment.
When I got to his CD collection, I saw more familiar names in the clusters of CDs by Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Shindell, James Taylor.
The biggest turning point came in the late 80's when his best friend Gregory Hicks was doing a lot of writing and they got involved in a band together. Terence's musical background includes playing double bass for the Burbank Symphony for two years. Terence supports himself working as a teacher of English, Writing and Humanities at a private school. I'm amazed, since I recall that the sound on his first CD, Division Street, was so clean and pure. Two people with an early love of listening to and playing music eventually met and fell in love with each other. Although Jane and Toby are talented musicians, they agree on one more vital issue: Music shouldn't be made just by musicians. Toby's three recordings, One More Day and Friendly Company (both on cassette) and Tides and Fortunes (available on CD or cassette)-can be purchased by calling 212-861-7019.
Toby first experimented with composing when he was a teenager.A  His early composing was an attempt at imitating popular rock music. Although Jane and Toby are talented musicians, they agree on one more vital issue:A  Music shouldn't be made just by musicians. Any man who will not be corralled by conventional thought and provokes others to think outside the box is dangerous to established power. Whoever attends a Seeger concert will come away with a challenge to the blind acceptance of faith in both government and its whitewashed, selective version of history. Those who lack the courage to demand that our leadership live up to these principles need to question their own patriotism.
Learning the 5-string Appalachian-style went slowly at first, but later would become his trademark. Pete met the love of his life, Toshi-Aline Ohta at Margot Mayo's Square Dance Club on 13th St. In 1947, Seeger formed a new band called the Weavers, with Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman. In the crucible of the depression of the 1930's, the poverty was so deep, that many people looked at the concept of Communism for answers to questions of social justice. He was done with it by the time the House Unamerican Activities Committee (HUAC) called him before them in 1955 to answer questions about the nature of his associations. Pete was technically exonerated, but was still guilty in the eyes of folks who agreed with HUAC. He shares a great many stories about the history of songs and how they are used by different ethnic groups and movements within the United States. During the final question and answer session, the big question gets asked: What do you do in the face of a corrupt all-powerful government?

He is also an avid participant in a peace vigil, held every Saturday in Wappinger's Falls, in upstate New York at the corner of Routes 9 and 9D from 12 noon to 2pm. It is our fervent hope that enough of us will rise up to justify Pete's optimism and prove ourselves worthy of his efforts to imbue us with courage and spirit. Pete met the love of his life, Toshi-Aline Ohta at Margot Mayo's Square Dance Club on 13th St.A  On that particular date, the club was having a work party and only Pete and Toshi showed up. He shares a great many stories aboutA  the history of songs and how they are used by different ethnic groups and movements within the United States.
My favorite shows right now include Friday Night Lights, Party Down,A and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.A  I'm a huge Kyle Chandler fan, and I would watch Kristen Bell or Hugh Laurie read the phone book. I live in a suburb of Philly and in my spare time (that's time away from work and TV), I like to read Shakespeare sonnets and plays 20 times apiece,A hunt ghosts, sing at the top of my lungs to Butch Walker songs, and write!
A So far, the only people not coming are Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, Steve Carrell, and BJ Novak.A  But everyone else, and we're talking everyone, like all of the writers, the rest of the cast, they'll be there, and I'll be hobnobbing right along with them! Friday night, I watched Canterbury's Law (well, okay, I DVR'd it, and watched it Sunday morning); it was really really good!!A  I love Juliana Margulies and I hate FOX for running the show into the ground, essentially, with Friday night airings.A  Hopefully it lives long enough to tell us what happened to her son!! We were impressed with the raw power in his lyrics, and mentioned to his agent, Barbara Roehrer, sitting in the audience that we were very interested in him. Once there, I noticed that among the serious tomes on his bookshelf were Beowulf, The Divine Comedy, Thomas Hardy's The Dynasts, The Greek Myths, and the Norton Anthology of English Literature.
His mom had been a performer in England and listened to classical music and show tunes at home.
During the late 80's and early 90's he fronted bands, playing original rock music in clubs in L.A.
When I asked him who his favorite authors are, he says they're too numerous to list but then cites Yeats and an Irish writer named Patrick Kavanaugh. Toby recalls excitedly their first meeting in 1982 at a winter music weekend sponsored by The New York Folk Music Society, aka Pinewoods.
We were impressed with the raw power in his lyrics, and mentioned to his agent, Barbara Roehrer, sitting in the audience that we were very interested in him.A  We next saw him at Sun Music, and this time his friend, Dan Bonis backed him up on mandolin, dobro and lap steel guitar.
But there is far more to the commonality this husband and wife share than that of their both being avid listeners, performers, and composers, or even in how they influence each other. According to Toby, you may start by coming out to hear the music.A  But the next step is to take it further by joining in and singing, learning to play an instrument, whatever.
Anyone who challenges great numbers of people to fight against the shallow mind control of pop culture is a dangerous man. Pete's knowledge of the historical role of music and its power is vast and he is generous in sprinkling enlightenment between the songs he sings.
Whatever associations Pete chose, they were always directed at social justice, and later, environmental preservation. In 1936, at age 16, he heard the five-string banjo for the first time at the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, North Carolina.
Pete could back Woody up and wound up hitting the road with him, hitch-hiking and riding trains. Pete got the word to Woody that they'd sung for the striking transport workers union at Madison Square Garden and Woody came east and joined the group.

In 1961, he was sentenced to ten years (for 10 charges) but the years could be served concurrently - so the sentence was actually for one year and a day.
Although he was blacklisted from radio and TV and many concert venues, he had so many sources of income that the detractors were unable to ruin his career the way they had other performers'. It sails mostly on the Hudson River between New York City and Albany, New York, primarily to offer environmental and biological education programs to school groups, touching on river biology, environmental protection of waterways and related topics, Every year The Great Hudson River revival and Clearwater Festival takes place in mid-June at the incomparably lovely Croton State Park. Pete got the word to Woody that they'd sung for the striking transport workers union at Madison Square Garden and Woody came east and joined the group.A  Later, Bess Lomax (Alan's sister) and Sis Cunningham also joined the group.
In 1943, during his first leave from the Army, he married Toshi, whom he credits with being the support that helped make the rest of his life possible. He says that the act became more and more acoustic over time, with dissenting members dropping out one by one. After we finished talking about his background, Terence walked over to the recording console and played the closing song on Waterproof, his next CD.
Many episodes of our nation's mistreatment of Afro-Americans and Native Americans have been swept under the rug.
From his book, The Incompleat Folk Singer, we learn that he got a ukelele at age eight and, with a friend, performed sea chanteys for the rest of his school. He was not one to knuckle under to any form of dogma, however, and, after about eight years, walked away from the party in 1950, a profoundly anti-Stalinist left winger. They simply wanted to establish that he had belonged to an entity that dared challenge their governance. This session took place at the height of the Vietnam War and, of course, so much of it is relevant today. They performed in shantytowns, earning little or no money singing anti-authoritarian folk songs. ThisA  session took place at the height of the Vietnam War and, of course, so much of it is relevant today. He'd harmonize with his brother on Christmas carols, school and camp songs, and he learned the pop songs of the day. Later, back in New York, Pete met Lee Hays, who, like Pete, was planning to write a book of union songs. It contains a great number of quotes from Pete that describe the core of his philosophical beliefs and some wonderful sing-a-longs.
The crux of his stance on social justice can be found in a statement near the beginning: "Are the light-skinned people of the world going to treat the dark skinned people of the world as human beings or as something less than human beings? But I felt that the world was so messed up that the only honest thing to do was to be a hermit. You're going to be pure yourself and let the rest of the world go to hell?' Whatever you decide to do, don't sit back and say 'Nothing can be done.' The people who will tell you that the human race is going to be 'all over' in a few generationsa€¦ throw their cocksureness right back in their face!
