An overabundance of color on a webpage can make it look busier than usual and distract visitors. A trend that has picked up speed of late is limiting the use of color to two or three colors, and revolving the entire design around these colors. The easy availability of a wide range of web fonts has liberated web typography from the Arial-Georgia-Verdana-Times New Roman stranglehold. One typographical trend that has entrenched itself deeply in web design ethos is the use of large fonts.
The in-your-face glossiness and drop shadows of the Web 2.0 era are, thankfully, behind us. Browse through the design archives of the entire 20th century, and you’ll see minimalism as a constant through every upheaval in the design world.
Browse through this striking collection of retro design from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and you’ll see texture as an omnipresent feature, appearing in virtually every design. Contemporary design trends dictate that the texture be not too obtrusive, nor excessively subtle. Admittedly, the wood background on this second example could be decried as being overly driven by the skeuomorphic trend sweeping the web and mobile apps. If you're looking for subtle textures for your sites, Subtle Patterns should be your first stop. With 21-inch+ monitors and Retina displays becoming the norm, screen resolutions have never been higher. With more pixels available, designers now have the freedom of scaling up and using larger, pixel-perfect design elements.
Icons are even replacing textual elements, the best example of which can be seen in the recent Gmail redesign that replaces text with easily-recognizable icons. As you think about the evolution to higher-resolution screens, check out this article for some helpful guidance. What fun to get the correct spacing for this particularly French punctuation in a reflowable eBook! PagetoScreen - Want to be part of a collaborative authored project?  Penguin is asking for you. Here we see the example of the first footnote in the chapter and the reference number in the text. Notes: Attention to detail - for PrintFootnotesThese need to be separated from the main body of the text, and are best set with a smaller size and possibly event a different typeface and colour. 1.What did Britta do to make sure the cab driver would drive them back to the hotel after bringing Elsa to the hospital? 9.If a person does something wrong, does it make everything all right to say a€?Ia€™m sorrya€?? 6.When Mama came home after Elsaa€™s death, how did she try to console herself and her children? 8.Although Britta didna€™t understand everything the doctor said, she was able to communicate fairly well.
4.The doctor obviously recognizes Britta, and even though he cana€™t come down to steerage, what does he do for her? 5.Why was Britta upset when she realized that Johan didna€™t have to go through the slow line she did? Not only will your site’s bounce rates suffer, but it will have an amateurish appearance.

Visually, this approach brings much-needed lucidity to the design and enhances readability, allowing the designer to highlight and draw the reader’s attention to particular areas of the page (say, a signup button).
Designers today have the option of working with a wide variety of fonts, which has spurred tremendous innovation in typography.
Many designers even eschew all other design elements for a quality large font that delivers the intended message. While Retro is difficult to pull off effectively, it is usually a very safe design choice because it strikes a chord with a fundamental human emotion: nostalgia. It was present during the kaleidoscopic color of the 70s, the neon-garishness of the 80s, and the grunge-dirt of the 90s. While the distressed grunge patterns of the Web 2.0 era are definitely out, a more subtle approach with softer patterns is recommended.
Anybody who has used Apple’s latest iPad 3 (ahem, iPad 4) can attest to the almost paper-like quality of the screen, thanks to its dense pixel count.
You see that the text alignment (left or right), is automatic depending on recto or verso achieved by the paragraph style using Towards the Spine.
The idea of any notes is that it is supplementary information and it is entirely optional that the reader even bothers to look, so setting in a style that does not distract from the flow of the reading experience is important.Footnotes are best numbered with an outdented figure, although (for technical reasons) the numbers are most often aligned to the main text block.
Minimalism, as a design ethos, is particularly relevant in web design because of its emphasis on function over form, readability over visual razzmatazz. A textured background can give off a layered, three dimensional effect, a certain warmth, and expanded room for creative play for designers. Keeping these pillars in mind when creating designs will help you push the limits and express yourself in a unique way without going too far and committing faux pas. Robert Bringhurst doesn't need to bother with those little superscript numbers because the supplementary information is very much nearby for the reader.Still, tradition dictates that in some books, there are footnotes and some there are endnotes (either at the end of the chapter or the end of the book).
Similarly, the glossy, reflective logos and buttons of Web 2.0 have been replaced by gentler buttons with only a hint of a gradient and soft, rounded corners.
Larger screen sizes and the bifurcation of the desktop and mobile experience allow designers to create web pages with larger iconography for desktops, while reserving smaller, crisper layouts for mobile applications. Most publishers will favour the numbers to begin again for each chapter, otherwise the numbers could get unweildy (superscript numbers of more than two digits could look ugly). Let's face it, book design and usability does not often win-out over commercial considerations. Where footnotes are long, they can be split across more than one page, although this will compromise the usability somewhat.EndnotesNotes are often placed at the end of the chapter or even at the end of the book (before the index). It is always exciting to drift off to nap under the glow of the red lanterns and star.  We are reading the book Ernie And The Lion Dancers at Story Time that tells how Ernie and his family prepare for their Chinese New Year Parade.
Lots of space for the text to breath. How I dislike some books that give me less than a centimetre of margin. This approach means that the reader will need to 'hunt down' the note referred to in the text.
On Movie Friday we  watched the movie Big Bird goes to China and Big Bird gave us tour of the Great  Wall of China.
This usually means that the endnotes will be sectioned by chapter or section. The advantage of endnotes is that the page composition in the vertical plane is not compromised for the sake of the note space. We counted with the count and worked on number puzzles. Remember Friday is Valentine’s Day. Ridiculous as this seems, we have seen books with footnotes that take more page space than the main text itself!Sidenotes (sometimes called Margin Notes)Clearly the page layout needs to provide the space in the margins for this to be an option. Don’t forget to have your child bring in Valentine’s Day cards and a snack like cookies, fruit, muffins, or crackers to share.
In this we can set the way the references are displayed in the text (superscript etc), and how the footnotes appear at the bottom of the page. Number Puzzles and counting with the CountArt: Fire Breathing Dragon headband paint and glitter project.

We need a paragraph style set up for the display of the footnotes themeselves and we can (optionally), use a character style for the reference figure in the text.As you can see from the first example spread the footnote list figure is aligned to the left edge of the text box. You will often see this in the books on your shelves, however, a more attractive arrangement is to 'outdent' these listed figures so that the footnotes are are aligned to the text and the figures are offset from this text box.InDesign does not provide the means to set footnotes outside the text box, so we need to plan for this by indenting all of the text inside the text box by an amount that we then remove from the left margins. You will see from the image provided here that we are using guides to make sure that these items align. They had fun experimenting with mixing the colored paints together on the heart cut outs to see what new color they could make. We made all the children little green frog bags to hold their Valentine’s mail and goodies. The one that I use here is called 'convert footnotes to (dynamic) endnotes' – meaning that the numbering will change if further notes are added. As always when using scripts to change content, save your work first! Scripts will often run through a long sequence of actions; you can always use 'revert' (from the file menu), to get back to the previous. It really helped to make the children’s Valentine’s Day extra special. The children made horse masks in celebration of the Chinese year of the horse. You will see from the image here that the endnotes have their own page(s) with a heading that matches other heading styles. On the day of our Chinese New Year lunch the children tried their hand at using chopsticks to eat Chinese food. Using these we can control the width and position as the footnotes are converted to side notes.
We always end the two week celebration with a parade and this year the children had so much fun we ended up having two. They lined up together with their horse masks and dragon headdresses ready to take a turn leading the whole parade. Let me know if you didn’t receive yours. The children have been really participating and gaining new knowledge each day on the alphabet rug at Rug Time.
The children happy, confident, and self-motivated about the process of learning.Happy Birthday to Jonathan, Trinity, and Catalina who all celebrated their birthdays this month. Not only are they excited to come in on Monday mornings but they are looking forward to learning and counting.  What could be better?
With all the rainy weather we have had we are focusing on getting the children exercising and learning with indoor activities. Now we can display their sight words up on the big screen, use it for number recognition, counting, alphabet recognition and phonics too. They stand up on their feet and while they count to 100 they do a different exercise movement for each group of ten such as  jog in place, stretch their arms, or clap their hands.
They see the numbers on the display, they count along, and they are exercising at the same time. This involves learning important skills that are required for Kindergarten such as letter and number formation, writing left to right, staying on the lines, and spacing properly. It is always easier for the children to learn properly the first time then it is to have to fix bad habits later so keep this in mind as you help your child practice their writing skills. It is also important that your child understands that they need to write their name at the top of their school papers and not other words like Mom too.
It is great to practice writing and spelling other words like Mom and Dad with your child but make sure your child understands that they need to only write their name at the tops of their school papers.
