I was intrigued by the submission that you, and others, had of our Thomas Buck and Elizabeth Scott being married in Glastonbury, CT, instead of Middletown, (or even instead of Litchfield, CT--which we had thought might be the case based upon the hand-written additional comment in the Endowment House records--even though it was added at a later date by a different hand).A  So, I decided to check the Glastonbury, CT vital records to see if I could truly identify our grandparents as the ones married there, and if so, on what date. We have always understood that our grandfather Thomas Buck was the son of another Thomas Buck, but this record, so far, does not give Thomasa€™ father's name.A  However, there was one other Thomas Buck living in Glastonbury at that time and he died there on Aug. Richard Goodale, oldest living son of John, by his first wife, sailed to Massachusetts in 1637 and settled in Newbury, MA. Many of these early records merely make a passing comment about one person in that community by the name of Buck but it points out that a family by that name resided there. Not all of these Buck families were related to each other, nor do we know the ancestry of these persons. The first, and only verifiable record of a€?OURa€? Thomas Buck, was his marriage to Elizabeth Scott (discussed above) on 4 May 1738 in Glastonbury, CT.
We know that Elizabeth Scott was 21 years old (born 30 July 1717 in Glastonbury, CT) at the time of her marriage [see above] and therefore we conclude that a€?OURa€? Thomas Buck would most likely have been of a similar age (born between 1710-18). The problem that genealogists face is that there were multiple Thomas Bucks, but there is good documentation for the birth and parentage of only one or two of them. The lucky Thomas Buck who was so avidly claimed by many wishful descendants was born on 6 Sep.
But, we are not the only family to have laid claim to that same (1712) Thomas, as our progenitor.
One of the Thomas Bucks of this era was noted as being the a€?Thomas Buck from Hebrona€? but how to identify him as one of the others is also a mystery. In summary, it is possible, but not provable, that OUR Thomas Buck (the husband of Elizabeth Scott) could have been the man born in 1712 to Thomas Buck, Sr. Ours?: Yes No ??? Remembering the many disclaimers given previously in the sections above of this recitation, we will proceed to give some background on a very prominent Buck family that settled in central Connecticut early in the colonial period. Because the first record of our Thomas Buck comes from Glastonbury, CT with his marriage there in 1738 to Elizabeth Scott, it is possible that our earliest known ancestor may have fit somewhere into this clan. The above record seems to be the source that so many researches have chosen to follow, but it is not the only record for a Thomas Buck and conflicts with some of the others.
Note that the above author tells us that the 1712 Thomas Buck was called a€?of Hebrona€? indicating that while he was not born there, he must have lived there for some time. Instead, this author, Samuel Buck, brings in some of the Scituate, MA, Bucks, who we have mentioned in an earlier place. Here this author is tying this family back into the Middletown Bucks, contrary to the prior author (Stiles) above. I hate to leave the reader with a bigger problem, rather than a tidy solution, but Ia€™m afraid there is no easy remedy for our Thomas Buck.
At least we have been able to trace OUR Thomas Buck back to his 1738 wedding in Glastonbury, CT., to Elizabeth Scott, the daughter of Thomas and Marcy (Goodale) Scott. June 1944 This little book has been so neatly kept by our dear son Melvin before he was called into the service of his country (April 6, 1943) and had no further need for it as a cash and expense account, so I have decided to use it as a diary for our missionary work. Friday evening for Farmington to take a sister of theirs who had been visiting them for a week or two. An article in the Holbrook Tribune says he wears the Air Medal, the Three Oak Cluster, and European Theatre Ribbon.
Among the mail this week was an announcement of Vern and Maxinea€™s baby (Stephen Leroy Nebeker, born Dec 6).
Imagine our surprise and joy to see Joe's nice car with Marva and the children, then our dear Navy boy, Maurice.
Christmas 1945 It has been a long time since I wrote in this little book, (my main companion when I am alone) and a great many things have happened.
Sometimes the children would want a tree, sometimes they wanted their stockings hung in a row on the mantel.
We were not always quite so far behind, although Dad usually did make it in from the cattle ranch about dark on Christmas Eve, then would have to go after that to Bro. 7 June 1945 -- on the 40th wedding anniversary of Rhoda and Ira.a€?This was also the last time the entire family was ever together at one time. Universal Church of Freedom Acceptance and Love - Ken's ReverendismsIn the interest of trying to do things better I want to start a blog page. 20 Worked most of the day putting up curtains and making other arrangements for housekeeping, also wrote some letters to the children. 22, June 1944 Wrote some more letters to let our friends know of our whereabouts and got them on their way in Friday's mail. 28 I have been laid up today with my foot which has bothered me ever since my accident.
4 Independence Day, but how different from what I have known since a little girl when I used to love so much to see the old red white and blue unfurled. 30 It was decided at the end of a hard day that I would get in the Wilkin's car and go on to conference. 12 Even if most of the people did go away (to an Indian celebration in Gallup) we had a nice meeting after all. 21 We left for home (Taylor) to attend Conference and the dedication of our new Chapel.
11 About noon we received a message that Gerald, and Zelda were in Taylor and wanted to know if we could come. 24 (After visiting Grant, Florene and family in Clarkdale and returning to Prescott) Christmas Eve. 12 Wash day, and what a merry time we have, poking, sizzling, then letting them drip dry. 14 Had a little Valentine party for some of the children and their mothers and served lunch. 1 March Have been working on a little blue & pink quilt to send to Melvin and Marie for the darling little stranger that is soon to bless their home.
25 How I wish I could have my dear little twins (Maurice & Marva) where I could spend their birthday with them.
15 May 1945 Have received word of the passing of our dearly beloved President Heber J.
4 July Not a note of music, not even a firecracker, Dad says, to remind us of Independence Day.
7 Next comes packing our duds, food and dishes and leaving for our camping grounds (for a Church Conference.) Oh, what a beautiful location we find, a perfect grove of oaks, cottonwoods and pines, with a little stream of sparkling cold water from a spring flowing languidly by, and a profusion of lovely wild flowers everywhere. 8 July 1945 What a beautiful forenoon session we had, good speaking, good singing, a sweet peaceful spirit was felt everywhere.
11 Ever since yesterday morning the radio news has been entirely centered around Japan.
12 For two weeks the Indians have been preparing for a dance, hauling wagon loads of green boughs to pile around for shelter for their camp.
14 Aug 1945 Today has been one of the most important perhaps among any that has come to our war-torn world. 15 All of our Indian friends met to celebrate at Obery Francisco's about three miles up on the mountain. 23 We have had quite a nice experience in our trip to the 1st Mesa, to the ancient Oraibi.
So instead of adding more to this page where no one can respond to my opinions click on the link and read my blog. Francisco and boys were here, wanted gas stamps to take them to see their brother & son who is over the mountain. 1945 Marva was taken to the hospital where a little boy baby was born at 3:30 PM (Richard Lee Kinatedar). BlogOn the Photos page you will see the pictures I took at this years Fantasy Fest in Key West.
Francisco says if we leave he will give his three sons, belonging to the Church, back to the Catholics. My grandparents the Walter Sealeys lived just two blocks from downtown in a home on Main St. I could not believe the courage that she had on display. After I took her picture I told her how my father was currently battling cancer and as she saw the tears well up in my eyes she offered me a hug and some words of encouragement. Elizabeth Hamstreet, mother of five little children, and whose husband is in the army, called on me and brought me some flowers. I was so moved I had to walk away to collect myself.I have no idea who this lady is or anything about herexcept that she is unbelievably brave.
There were thousands of women in Key West and most of them were fully clothed because of their fear of exposing themselves. Sealey Bldg.- still standing!) I was raised in Alachua, coming to school in 1942 (3rd grade) and remaining there until 1952 when I graduated.
I have put her on my list of life's heroes. They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What wonderful memories I will always cherish from my hometown! ?My husband bought our first car when we married in 1957, from Bill Enneis.?Thigpen's Drug Store was on the corner of Main Street.
From now on when the greatest college football players of all time are being discussed his name will be brought up. In my opinion people that make a big deal out of their religion are trying to convince themselves andreally don't believe.
Tebow was ill but went ahead and played anyway, some people would say this proves how tough he is.
He also sold tickets to ride the train to Wiliford, Bell, Curtis and Wannee to the west of Alachua, and to LaCross, Brooker, Sampson City, and Starke to the east of Alachua. Tebow been thinking about the team and what was best for the team it never would have happened. Waters family, was the agent at the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) across the street, both depots were on the south end of town. Tebow should not have been in the game but he was becuaseheis trying topad his stats so he can win another Hiesman Trophy and the Gators can win another national championship. If something is good enough to be the best no one has to make it look better than it is. Leaving your best players in a football game so the team can gain more yards and score more touchdowns might get more voters to notice you but it is short sighted. There is a reason some teamsalways stay on top and it is because they tkae the first team out during blow outs and give the second and third teams playing time.
Tebow played when he was sick and stayed in the game after it was out of hand because he wanted personal recognition and his coach wants team recognition. If selfishness and greed are part of christianity is it really good enoughfor anyone to follow? This past week there has been a lot of attention brought to the civility of Americans. West's interuption of Ms Swift's acceptance speech and of course Representative Wilson's "You Lie" moment during Pres.
Obama's speech.Or the three of these I would give a pass to Ms Williams as she was on a field of competiton and let her emotions get the better of her.
Highway 441 ran through Alachua on main street; the by-pass and overpass was not built until the forties. By her own admition she made a mistake and seems to be honestly remorseful. It is unclear if what Mr.
If it was a stunt, well It was still in bad taste and if it was not a stunt then it was just plane rude.Certainly this man is entitled to his opinion and he should be allowed to voice that opinion.
Wilson, I understand that politics are a nasty business but they do have rules of decorem that are to be strictly adhered to. Formerly there had been a big cotton farming operation in the area supporting two cotton gins. One gin was in the middle of town on a spur railroad track of the SAL and one on the south end of town on SAL's mainline.
In general ,however, because the "Main stay'* of the economy of the community was farming, the area did not suffer as much as other areas. We all have to interact with one another and I think our world would be a better place if we all tried to remember the Golden Rule.
Little happened during the week; school, church, gardening, cleaning yards and a few social club meetings. Let us all do unto others as we would have them do unto us.As so many people have had tough times recently I have been in a bit of a funk.
One thing that keeps me going is remembering what someone told me years ago and that is that all things will pass. As we go through good times we should remember that this too shall pass and as we go through the tough times we must remember that good times are on the other side of these problems.I think that the good times are getting closer for me personally and for the country in general.
There was visiting with friends, getting haircuts and other amenities of life that you hadn't done in weeks or months. His cancer treatments were making him very ill so the Doctors stopped the Chemo but conitued the full Radation regimen. I think they areoptimisticabout the coming surgery to remove all of the cancer.I do not understand these people that think our current healthcare system is just fine and does not need overhauled. Most businesses closed at 5 - 6 O'clock, but grocery stores stayed open until 8-10 O'clock. Perhaps they can make it a little less broke. The cost of my parent's healthcare is a signifcant percentage of their retirement income and a few years back when I had to have my gall bladder removed my bills forced me into bankruptcy.
Our current system does nothing but benefit big healthcare companies at the expense of the American population. I don't know what the answers are as a matter of fact I probably don't even know what the questions are. I do know that we are the wealthiest nation the world has ever seen and for any member of our society to suffer because of the greed of others is simply unacceptable.
If a chain is only as strong as its weekest link isn't also a society only as healthy as its sickest citizen? The indivdual health of each Americanaffects us all.
The healthier each indivdual is the healthier our society is, isn't it?I have heard of cancer clusters before but I never thought I would be the cause of one.My father is just finishingfour weeks of chemo and radiationand getting ready for surgery to remove the rest of his tumor and thishas been very trying for him and the rest of us in the family as well. In about two weeks I havetostart a job for anothercouple and he has cancer.I cannot remember the last time I knew someone that was undergoing cancer treatments, now I know four. Obviously, I understand it is so much more difficult for them but it wears on me night and day.I like to help people and I like to make people feel good. The Four H Club, sponsored by the school and County Agent, was a big influence in the community.
I get to the end of the job and all of the sudden he has a problem, I'm insulted. This was a job that I sub-contracted from someone else andI guess there was a communication breakdown which caused the problem, so I guess I learned another lesson. Occasionally a theatrical company would come to town and help the community put on a production of some kind.

I am finished sub-contracting work from another painter. So last Friday I was on my way home from work and it was pouring down rain.
Among the other things you did for entertainment or diversion was to go to Gainesville to see the movies.
I felt as though I was driving a little too fast so I slowed down to about 45 MPHbut it was not enough I hit a flooded out piece of road and started to hydroplane. There were two theaters in Gainesville; the Florida Theater on University Avenue and the Ritz (Or Lyric) Theater near the post office. The vehicle went off the road and into the wet grass, the saturated ground sucked me in and I lost control of the wheel and then my truck flipped over.My first thought was, "this is gonna hurt". One of the cool things about going to tlie movies in Gainesville; they were air conditioned. My second thought, as I hung there by my seatbelt, was, " how in the hell am I gonna get outta here".Someone knocked on my window to let me know that they called 911 and I told him I was OK and I never saw him again. I eventually figured out how to get out and as I emerged from my truck I saw the Sherriff's Deputy walk up to me.I was able to find my wallet and cell phone and as I sat in the back of the police cruiser I called my Dad. I felt like such an ass putting this extra pressure on my Dad right now, he just doesn't need this. Ehjring hot weather you would go to Poe Springs, a few miles west of High Springs for swimming and a picnic or to Blue Springs, which was a little further west.
After being picked up and being taken back to my parent's house my Dad gave me some dry clothes and I went into the bathroom to put them on and it hit me for the first time, I could have died and I broke down in tears. It is a chance for him to make alittle money but more importantly it is a great opportunity for me to teach him to stay in school. It was located just west of present day I - 75 on the south side of Millhopper Road to Gainesville. The east-west passage was the largest From the west entrance you went east down a gradual slope for 30 to 50 feet. As hesets out on his vision quest his passions and prejudices will shape a life for him that only he can know if it is right. When you got to the bottom and center of the cross, you could see an extension to the north that extended 30 to 40 feet. I only hope he doesnot disappoint himself.I went to a small little get together last night and I met some very nice people.
Several things happened that made me think. One of the first things I noticed was the racial make-up and dispersement of the people. I did not make a count but there was about equal numbers of black and white people present and as usual the party split with two groups.
Several university students were injured exploring the cave and rumor has it that possibly one or more may have died as a result of dare-devil climbing.
One group was predominantly white and the other black.I had only met one person that was there so I cannot attest to the racial beliefs of the party goers but everyone seemed very polite and I sensed no racism of any sort. As a matter of fact everyone seemed to be very cordial to the people of opposite race.I do believe that most people simply feel more comfortable around people like themselves.
As the participation in WWII grew in scope and activities the depression ended and the good times returned. C.
We all grew up learning certain behaviors that are common to our race and different from others.
When we have a choice most of us will go with the people with similiar cultural concepts. One thing I heard that I never thought of before, and now wonder why I did not was, "I do not judge people based on the color of their skin". This past week it came to my attention that getting de-baptized has become popular in America. If an adult decides to join a religion and wants to get baptized well more power to them, however, when baptism is forced upon infants or immature children I do not see the purpose. What does the child receiving the sacrament get but more importantly what do the adults get out of forcing their beliefs on someone that cannot make a conscious decision to join them.?The Universal Church of Freedom, Acceptance and Love will definitely be setting up a sacrament of de-baptizing for those that felt as though they were originally baptized against their will. I was in grade school when my parents decided to become members of The Lutheran Church I was baptized soon after.
Frankly, it's been only out of respect for my parents that I never legally changed my name. I was to young to understand it and looking back I started questioning the christian religion even then.
Okay, with that behind us, let's see what my dad, at the age of 97, now recalls about the old days in Alachua. I also remember not repeating everything that I was supposed to.On the other end of this is the thought that perhaps we should have a sacrament for those that now want to consciously join our religion. His station was at the southernmost rail line running by Copeland Sausage Company and Ennis Motor Company. Leland manned the Seaboard station just a few yards from Papa Waters' Coastline station on the south end of town.
David manned another Coastlme station, known as "East Alachua," which was located up by the current location of US 441.
I have come to accept death as a condition of life and I understand that my father will die some day, hopefully not yet,so that is not the difficult part.My father is one of the toughest men I have ever known and I have never seen anything beat him. The old road tfiat comes in under the railroad overpass and then turns north at Main Street was the original US 441 . Am I man enough to do what needs to be done and help the other members of my family get through this? Passengers traveling to High Springs would disembark in Alachua and look for other transportation to High Springs.
There are many things that I need my father to tell me so that we as a family will be prepared for life without him but how can I ask him now? I do not want to be even the least bit negative in my thinking but our business and my mother's future depends upon me knowing these answers. I do not know the percentages or the doctors prognosis for survival so my hopes are of only the best outcome.
Quite honestly I do not handle death very well so it would be best for me if I was the next member of my family to pass away, not that I have any plans for this. As results were telegraphed in, he would give them to my dad (Beb), who would "run" them to City Hall, where a large board displayed the latest election information.
My parents have given me so much and it has never been in doubt that I would be there for them but now that this time is coming can I step up and carry the load that my father has been carrying since his father died almost thirty years ago? The center of town in those early days was just north of the Seaboard tracks, on the southern end of Main Street, as I think of it today. If two consenting adults chose to have sex after exchanging money it does not affect anyone but those two people.People that are againstprostitution probably need to get laid. If you have been paying attention to the news and recent events it should be clearthat our lawmakers are not even moral by their own standards. The party of family values, the GOP, has been headlining the news with sex scandals on a regular basis. It might not be money, it might be dinner and a movie or it might be agreeing to do something around the house or it might be having to share emotions. Besides you are not actually paying for the sex, you are actually paying for her to leave when the sex is over.Sex is sex it does not matter who does it our what agreements are made before doing it, it is sex.
Mott's blacksmith shop was just up the street from the barber shop of Willie Cauthen (Hal's dad). Sex is fun and sex is not damaging to anyone if it is done between two or more consenting adults.
If more people did it less people would be so uptight about it.I hope the everyone had a great 4th of July.
I am not usually the type to make a big deal about holidays but July 4th is all about FREEDOM. Our founding fathers came together and and decided that they did not need to take it anymore. One of tfie hotels, The Hawkins House, later named the Skirvin Hotel, was just south of the southernmost railroad tracks.
Large bowls and platters of meats, potatoes, vegetables and breads were placed on the tables and the guests would pass them around just like at a large family gathering. I recall one summer when Dad and I were "batching" and he and I ate there quite often.
If they were alive today they would probably be in prison.I am not suggesting that thesegreat men of yesterday should be held to the standards of today but if they could not change those attitudes they would be in big trouble. I cannot imagine what George Washington would say about being told to wear a seatbelt to protect himself or Thomas Jefferson being told he couldsexually harrasss his employees. We have some pretty good evidence that the founding fathers were pretty much drunk most of the time and probably smoked hemp as well. Living in town, we enjoyed the convenience of regular home delivery of the block of ice needed to keep food in the box cool. The old man who delivered the ice was named Lige, but I don't recall the name of the horse that pulled the wagon. The best-known train that ran through town was named "Peggy." Peggy was a Seaboard train that ran from Staike through Bell to Wannee, where the train would turn around and retrace its route. Yourmight not think that your vote will count but if you are not registered then you do not even have a voice. I recall a story that now escapes Dad's memoiy about what his mom and the other Waters mothers would do from time to time when the kids got under foot. Since all three moms in the Waters clan had access to the railroad, they could use "Peggy" to occupy the kids for a few hours.
You haveoptions other than Democrat and Republican, personally I am an Independent and I vote.
Simply put the kids on the train when it arrived from Starke, and they would be out of the way for a few hours while riding down to Wannee and back.
I e-mail myrepresentatives eventhough I am sure they do not actually read the e-mail, I send, I know someone does and if I write enough and I am eloquent enough my voice will be heard and my feelings will be passed up the chain, yours will also.Ain't none of us getting out of this world alive.
I remember at least one occasion when my cousins Larry, Johnny Dampier, Lano (Delano), maybe Clara Nell, and I made that trip. I never wish death upon anyone and would never rejoice at the death of another but I shall not lose a moments sleep ever this man's death.
I do not know if he molested a child but I do know he did things that he should not have done. He did things that harmed children.I do not now nor will I ever understand fans that act as though they just lost a family member when acelebrity dies.
Since all the "big boys" (older cousins) got off during the temporary stop, of course I did too.
Iremember being shocked when Elvis died and saddened when John Wayne died and when Dale Earnhardt died I was stunned but come on.
As the runt of the lot, I was the last to grab for the hand rail when the train started moving, and I almost had a very long walk back to Alachua.
Other entertainment for Waters boys: Ventures into Warren*s Cave were treacherous in Dad's day. How can the death of a person that I never knew be equated to this? One person that I mourned deeply that was not a family memeber was one of my college professors, a great man named Dr.
He says they had no flashlights, so they took "fat pine" sticks to light up, once they were deep enough to need a light source. Dad recalls one occasion when the circus was in town and some of the horses got loose just as a train was passing though. I played football in college so we were there before school started and in the first couple of days all of the freshman sort of made fun of Dr.
It was an outdoor theater composed of a billboard-type screen and rows of logs for the audience to use for seating. The upper classmen soon set us straight and made it known to us that this was a man to be honored.
The show was located in a vacant lot on the east side of Main Street, approximately one block south of the main downtown intersection, where the First National Bank was located for many years. Marbles were a lot less expensive than the electronic devices kids have for entertainment today. I was surprised when he wished me good morning and called me by my name, we had never been introduced. So was everything else! Bland Horse Races 1944  By Kent Doke:The Bland horse races actually started in Haynesworth in the summer of 1944 when Paul Emery and I raced our horses on the straight graded road North of Hollingsworth. As I learned later this man memorized the names and photo's of every incoming freshman and that is how he knew my name. I had borrowed an English saddle to race with and when we jumped off, the right stirrup leather came off the safety catch and was dragging.
I couldn't get it off my foot and was afraid the horse would step on it and drag me off I always claimed that was why I lost the race and it was why I rode bareback in all the races to follow.
Somehow Jessie Shaw got involved and we started having horse races in Bland every Wednesday afternoon after school.
This act touched my sole in a way that I never thought could happen and when I learned of Dr. At that time people not in the service were making more money than they had ever made in their life. Kenney's death I knew that this world would never be the same without him.As I write this I have tears streaming down my face as I remeber a man that so few people knew but he impacted this world more than all of the celebrities put together ever will. No cars were being made during the war so people rode with each other to the nearest entertainment. What is now County Highway 241 that runs out from Alachua to the Santa Fe River was at that time a seldom graded road.
In the late thirties and early forties this new road was being cut using only mules and convict labor.
Being as I am a painter I work outside in all kinds of weather and I just cannot understand how others act in uncomfortable weather conditions.Yes it is hot and yes it is uncomfortable but some people act as though it is actually painful. I still remember the guards with shotguns loaded with buckshot guarding the prisoners as they drove the two mule teams pulling small drag buckets of dirt. A couple of weeks ago when I went to my son's graduation I was one of the few men dressed appropriately in a sport jacket and tie.
Jessie really got into the racing; he would grade one quarter mile of the road using a tractor and a grader he bought.
I saw people dressed in shorts and t-shirts that were sweating just as much as I was and looked just as uncomfortable as I was so what exactly was their point? In this record setting heat I have no air conditioner. He cut the fence so cars could be parked on the West side of the road and, at it's peak, we would have about 250 people out to see the races. It is only a $15.00 part and should only take a couple minutes to change, I just don't care enough about it to do it. I raced my own horse, The Santa Fe River Ranch entered a horse, Jessie raced a horse, Roy Ceilon, J. I think most Americans are really becoming pussies.I don't like the cold weather but heat I get used to.
I grew up in Ohio and I have shoveled snow in bitter cold with wind chills well below zero. Sure you can put on more layers of clothing but you can only put on so many pairs of socks and only one pair of gloves and your face is usually unprotected. My family and friends tell me that these women are destroying my life and I need to leave them but it is not them, it is me.They do not destroy my life, I do.

Once George Duke brought a race horse and jockey with a jockey saddle in to race against Roy's horse.
I will admit that my selection of women is not all that good but I cannot ever seem to make a relationship work. We were very lucky to win that race and did so only because the jockey couldn't control the horse at the start.
I work too hard and flirt too much and I am too strong willed,my relationships suffer.I have become happy with who I am eventhough I cannot seem to find a person that wants to share my life for very long.
From time to time I do get lonely but I do not mind being alone. This past week a small kitten showed up at my house. It does not want to be picked up but it is getting to be more comfortable with me, I can pet it when I feed it. My new cat is starting to trust me and this gives me hope. Some day I will get another chance. Somewhere there is a person that be will becomfortable with me and learn to trust me eventhough I am who I am.Last week my niece graduated from high school and this week my son will as well. About fifty years after the races had stopped I asked Roy how much he thought was bet on those races and he said probably about twenty five hundred dollars. Also about fifty years later I was introduced to an old lawyer in Gainesville who asked me if I had ever ridden horses in the Bland Races. I can recall that i had so much potential to make something of my life and make a difference in the world.I do not know if I will ever reach the potential I once had but I believe I am happy with my life.
As far as making a difference, with the number of people that visit this site and read my thoughts, I must be touching someone. Makes me feel good, even now. Aiachua High School Memories  Charles Beverly (Beb) Waters Class of 1930 The Alachua Indians played football on a field that was right next to the school rather than down the hill from the grammar school. As I have said so many times I am not trying to make anyone believe the things I believe, I just want people to honestly think about what they believe. For all of the young people graduating from high school and college around the country my best wishes go out to you all.
The offense was the Notre Dame Box, The quarterback lined up about four feet behind the center and had a fullback lined up a few feet behind him.
The other two halfbacks were lined up on their left (or right), stacked one behind the other to form a square box. He has been terrorized for years because he is one of few doctors in America that performs late term abortions. The QB would take a direct snap and then hand off to one of the backs or drop back to pass. The radical right finally got rid of him.Why do anti abortionists call themselves "pro life"? A person is not"pro life" when they are in favor of murder and killing as ways to solve problems.
Only a person of very limited intelligence is unable to find another way of solving problems other than resorting to violence. It is a dream of mine that no woman ever need to abort her fetus, but I understandthat some times it is needed and all women should be able to have that option.
I do understand that a society does need these options that are"anti life" but we need to do our best to limit the usage of these methods.I went to Hulover Beach for Memorial Day and a little something happened that reminded me why I started this website. I was lying on the beach doing my crossword puzzle and minding my own business when all of a sudden some lady started yelling at me.Haulover's clothing optional section is clearly marked so if she was surprised that I was naked it was her own fault. She did have some small children with her so I can understand that she would not want these children to be playing close to naked people but all she had to do was move down the beach and the problem would have been solved. And yes, we wore leather helmets and had drab brown canvas pants; and the jerseys were whatever you could find and had no numbers.
She insisted upon being belligerent and making a scene and calling us sick and perverts.I can handle being called a pervert by ignorant people but this kind of an attitude upsets me. Had she not said anything and just moved down the beach tthe children would have thought nothing of it.
Alachua didn't have a good punter, so Marion Pearson would try to throw a long Interception rather than try a weak punt. The Big Rival was the High Springs Sandspurs, at least until around 1929 when we had "the Big Fight" playing in High Springs, The referee that night was a prominent High Springs doctor (Whitlock?), maybe even the mayor. I guess there are a lot of people that think we should be ashamed of our bodies but these people have issues that they need to deal with.I am not as young as I once was and my once athletic figure is not as nice as it used to be but I am not ashamed of my body and neither should anyone else. Emotions were running high, and an intense argument between players, coaches and the referee ended in a Big Fight when Jessie Shaw knocked the referee out cold and the townspeople charged the field. I prudently ran for the car. As a result of the fight, the teams didn't play each other again for a number of years (20?). Today too many drivers are under the immpression that they are the only ones that matter or the only ones on the road.
I will never understand why people drive in the left hand lane of the freeway when they will not even come within 10 mph of the speed limit. School buses couldn't be used for game trips, so townspeople would drive the players, Barney Cato was a rural mail carrier and had a son on the squad. They just continue straight ahead like a moving pylon oblivious to the hazards they cause.Cell phones are one thing that can cause some really bad driving and I don't know why. The school buses back then were Model A trucks with a row of seats down each side and a bench down the middle.
I have a cell phone and I talk on it while I drive but I make sure that the driving is the most important part of my life at that momment. If a person can drive and talk to passengers in the vehicle than we should be able to talk to someone on the phone.I cannot understand why anyone would ever try to text while driving and yet I see this quite often. She had a bumper sticker that reminded people to not drink amd drive and she proceeded to drive off the side of the road and almost wrecked in front of me trying to get straightened out.
She turned down the same street I was turning on and she continued driving like a fool so I blew my horn at her. She used one finger to wave at me and then I noticed she also had a license plate that had "In God We Trust" on it. If you do not love your mother, I hope the two of you can resolve your differences.I am not a big fan of doing something nice for someone just because it is a holiday. If the people in your life do not know that you love them based upon the things you do all year long, one or two days a year won't make a difference. I never make a big deal out of mothers day or birthdays or any other particular day, I try to show that I care every day.I have known people that make a big deal out of showing how much they love their families on special occassions. I am pretty damned sure the people close to me know that I love them but that won't stop me from doing those little things that prove it.
Was this minister more interested in his parishoners salvation or the amount of money collected in that plate?A few years later I was living in Alabama and I would go to church occasionally with my girlfriend and her mother. One dayI overheard a discussion about how the minister wanted my girlfriends mother to contribute more money to the church. This old widow lady lived on a very small social security income and I got more than just a little upset.I told her that she has given enough to the church through the years and now it is her turn to receive. She made a comment about god providing and I brought up the fact that Ken provided her groceries the week before. Within a few weeks I moved back to Ohio.Recently I was at my parents house and I noticed an envelope on the counter.
It had the name of my parents church on it and it had a place to fill in an amount and a place for their name. A long one story building was in its' place containing eight classrooms and a big auditorium.
If people want to give to a church that is fine but I believe it should be doneanonymously. What right does a church have to shame and intimidate people into donating money? People will give what they can afford and what they feel is appropriate and anyone that needs to use strong arm tactics to force people to give more are no better than an extortionist.A few years back I was supposed to paint a house for a couple but about one week from the date they called me and told me that due to family problems they would have to cancel. When I first met the Smiths Mrs.Smith was an attractive woman with a very friendly personallity. One big event of that year was a class play about the Pilgrims Thanksgiving and with the Indians. I soon realized that though this vibrant lady was going through a battle for her life she lost her hair but not her friendly personallity. From time to time as I face troubles in my own life I call on my memories of the Smiths and how they dealt with problems far worse than anything I might have been going through. One day a student walked behind her, on the way to the restroom, and kicked the chair out from under Miss.
I was searching online for some information on a radio personality that I listen to and as Iread about this person I learned some things about another person on the same radio program.I have never metthis other person but on air she is a very bubbly person. Her on air persona is that of an "airhead" but from exchanging e-mails with her I came to find out sheis much smarter than she acts on air. As a matter of fact the other members of the show often discuss how she is always happy and upbeat. Some people in this world get dealt badcards and decide to fold their hand, some people play the hand they are dealt and winthe game. I have found a new source of inspirationand another reason to keep playing the game of life.Last week I heard sports storyabout NBA great Isiah Thomas taking a job at a Florida University and donating his salary back to the school. Thomas is a very wealthy man and he is still being paid by the New York Knicks so it is not a monetary sacrifice butwith the amount of work requiredto be a college coach it is a lot of work to do for free.I heard Mr.
Thomas make a statement that this is something he feels he needs to do because when he was young he took advantage of youthprogramsthat required charitable donations from others. Thomas has gotten a lot of bad press the last couple of years but thislittle bit of good sure helps make up for a whole lot of bad.
It makes me wonder why more wealthy people cannot give more than just money as a form of charity. Thomas has a chance to touch lives and make a difference and he is asking nothing in return.Often times I have found myself in situations where I stop to help someone. I am not a mechanic but I can help people with flat tires, dead batteries and simple things. Most of the time when I am done helping out the person offers me payment and I always say thesame thing, "One day awhile back someone gave me a favor and today I am giving that favor to you. The only thing Iask in return is that some day you give this favor to someone else that needs it."Wouldn't the World be a better place if people stopped thinking money is the most important thing? Wouldn't it be nice if people just helped out because it was the right thing to do and not because there was something in it for them? I don't do nice things for people fopr money and I don't do nice things because I am trying to buy my way into Heaven. Greed is much like pornography in that it is hard to define but we all know it when we see it.
I had to wear glasses beginning in the seventh gi'ade, so did not participate in sports much. Of course we all have different visions, don't we?It seems to me our greed is destroying us, The cause of the world's financial meltdown is none other than greed. Greed of Wall Street, Greed of Banks, Greed of Speculators, Greed from our Politiciansand the list goes on. Perhaps the biggest event in our High School lives was the Junior and Senior theatrical productions. People at the helm once told the rest of us no, you cannot afford this but lately due to their own greed they started showing us how we could get it eventhough we cold not afford it.The collapse of the housing market was in a large part due to the Greed of Realators and Home Builders.
For generations the industry stayed clear of Speculators because they knoew it would cause long term problems eventhough they would make short term profits. The Junior class play was usually produced in the fall and the Senior class play in the spring.
Our Banking system has collapsed due toour elected officials taking money from banks toremove regulation from the finacial industry.
Thelarge banks were the largest owners of oil in America and then when the banks went broke what happened to the price of oil?
There is no way possible one man did this. This scam was so large there had to be many, many people involved. If investors had not been so driven by their desire to make money with no effort they would have asked questions and they would have seen the red flags.Desire to make money and have nice things is notGreed. Taking advantage of situations and people to achieve results that benefit a few while harming the masses is just wrong. Wq were excused from classes to climb into a ton and a half truck to go load scrape iron from some garage or farm. Som.eone asked her a question and she answered, "just a minute, I have the answer right here in my drawers". So, if you could manage to leave the Supply room unlocked, you then had to find a classroom window unlocked.
In closing I have always told anyone who asked, my years at A H S was comparable to the Tom Sawyer story. One gin was in the middle of town on a spur railroad track of the SAL and one on the south end of town on SAL's mainline. There was visiting with friends, getting haircuts and other amenities of life that you hadn't done in weeks or months.
Frankly, it's been only out of respect for my parents that I never legally changed my name.
Okay, with that behind us, let's see what my dad, at the age of 97, now recalls about the old days in Alachua. Leland manned the Seaboard station just a few yards from Papa Waters' Coastline station on the south end of town. The old man who delivered the ice was named Lige, but I don't recall the name of the horse that pulled the wagon. I recall a story that now escapes Dad's memoiy about what his mom and the other Waters mothers would do from time to time when the kids got under foot. I couldn't get it off my foot and was afraid the horse would step on it and drag me off I always claimed that was why I lost the race and it was why I rode bareback in all the races to follow.
He cut the fence so cars could be parked on the West side of the road and, at it's peak, we would have about 250 people out to see the races. Once George Duke brought a race horse and jockey with a jockey saddle in to race against Roy's horse. We were very lucky to win that race and did so only because the jockey couldn't control the horse at the start.
Alachua didn't have a good punter, so Marion Pearson would try to throw a long Interception rather than try a weak punt. As a result of the fight, the teams didn't play each other again for a number of years (20?).
School buses couldn't be used for game trips, so townspeople would drive the players, Barney Cato was a rural mail carrier and had a son on the squad.
