I have a project for an ecology class & we just finished a debate on the K-T Extinction. While PowerPoint still holds approximately 95% of the presentation software market, some people prefer using Prezi due to its unique “zoom feature”, that moves the audience back and forth between a high level overview and specific individual slides (as seen in the video example below). But, what if I told you that you can actually TWEAK PowerPoint to have a very similar type of feature?
Check out the following video that shows a similar type back and forth toggling that I created entirely in PowerPoint. In this post I’m going to show you how to “Prezify” your PowerPoint and create that fluid Prezi-like non-linear experience for your audience. The first thing you need to do to Prezify your PowerPoint is to create an overview slide that essentially gives a “birds eye” view of the different parts of your presentation. You will want to make sure thatyou’re really CREATIVE when creating this first slide since this slide sets the overall theme for the presentation. Next, working off you’re overview slide, you will then create the rest of your slides for your presentation. Once you have built out all the remaining slides in your deck it’s now time to link them all to your overview slide.
Now, whenever we want to go back to the overview slide we can simply hit our icon in the bottom right corner and that will take us back (aka “zoom out”) to the overview slide and bring us back into context for the rest of the presentation. While not mandatory, it’s a nice touch when there is a smooth transition from your overview slide to your individual slides and vice versa. They want an easy answer, such as “one per minute,” but the truth is that there’s no easy answer. But when speakers fill almost every centimeter of their slides with words, bullets, and graphics, they give the audience no sense of priority. White space—or “empty” space—is a critical component of guiding viewers to your most important point.
The main goal—as with all communication—is to transfer information, knowledge, or inspiration from you to your audience.
The point I wanted to make with that slide was this: If you’re not visible when your audience is searching for you, it’s as if you don’t exist. Because the presenters know their slides won’t make sense without explanation, they add a lot of text to make sure their slides can be understood months or years after their presentation.
Slideuments fail in both roles; they lack the detail required by a written document but are too cluttered to serve as an effective visual.
Design visuals that grab the audience’s attention and demand your explanation during your presentation, and create a detailed document that people can take away from the presentation once you’ve finished speaking. Often when I attent meeting in my network then people are often just use a PowerPoint slideshow with a lot of text and no images. Entertain me with your wit, your stories painted with glorious vocabulary, your humor…but please, don’t show anymore PowerPoint slides!

A few charts for the data driven are very helpful and PP is a good way to offer them, along with some duplicates as handouts as the audience is exiting. PP is NOT a safety net for the speaker but most who use it hang off it with such dependence that it sucks the life out of the remarks. Although he’s an academic and a bit overwhelming, Edward Tufte is an expert at the corrupting effect of PowerPoint.
What happens each and every time is visual text only, handouts and the eventual recycling bin with no staying power to any of the information. Prezi is a newer flash-based application that allows the user to create a presentation using a large, blank page instead of traditional slides. Many people like to stay within their comfort zone, and Prezi is outside that zone for many non-designers. The other important point to make is that if your story is poor, neither tool with help you! However, if you have the time to learn a new software and really want to create an interactive experience for your audience that has a strong “wow” factor you MIGHT want to consider using Prezi. The biggest problem I see with PowerPoint is that most people really don’t understand how to create a fun and dynamic presentation. This BORING format is what people have been taught in school, and most people don’t understand the full potential of PowerPoint.

I would assume they do not license the fonts to be used with their software thus the limited free fonts. If you want to follow best practice, simply printing out your PowerPoint slides to create a handout is no longer an option. But given that research indicates taking detailed text off the slides, creating handouts for detailed information makes sense.

I need to create a ppt to introduce Year 9 students to the different sections of a newspaper. The templates are being used a a classroom to give a newflash on the ethic training of the 21st century and businesses of today.
I’m excited to let my students fiddle around with these templates when we learn about newspapers. My role is reporter so as the reporter I have to make a newspaper article…This helps so much.
