Few weeks ago, RightBanners, a company focused on creating custom banners and landing pages, contacted me asking to review their service.
Besides experiencing the service, I though this was a great chance to provide a handy freebie to WRD readers.
I simply provided the logo, described the landing page I had in mind with the list of menu items and some of the content.
I was satisfied with the service, they were always there to reply and things worked pretty fast. You’re probably familiar with the basic things you need in starting a website, and already pointed your domain name to your web host. To start with, a web page is basically an HTML document viewable from the Internet or a local area network.
Additional useful programs that you can use here are Adobe Dreamweaver, Microsoft Web Developer, and similar apps that have also have built-in code editors. By examining the code above, the words used are all readable English words except on those keywords that have angle brackets and forward slash with them. This is a very simple web page as compared to what you practically view on most websites which has beautiful layout, contains videos, images, flash and even audio. Learning HTML is actually simpler and not as cryptic compared to other programming languages.
Find the feature that enables you to do file transfer such as an FTP program or, the file browser or, File Manager on your CPanel (shaded in blue above) then prepare to upload your index.html file.
If you’re not yet familiar with what’s inside a Cpanel, you can explore try its features on cPanel’s official site and try the demo page.
4.) Using the file browser of your CPanel, go to the root directory of your website then look for a folder named public_html (some web host named the folder with “www”). The public_html is the directory where the web server’s program starts parsing the scripts for your website. If everything went right, that is, you have uploaded your index.html to your public_html folder, you are now prepared to test your domain name’s connection with your website and view your HTML document live on the web. In creating larger web pages or huge collection of web pages, the procedures stated above are enough to guide you in tackling the same thing. I am Samith Jhon a content writer and a Professional Blogger.  I am certified with 000-590 Exam which is very popular these days and have a great scope in the field of IT Certification. With the assistance of a good SEO services company, your website would truly turn into a virtual storefront that would funnel all good things for you and your offered products and services. HTML (HyperText Markup Language) files are text files that include tags that indicate the structure of a Web page.
An element (or tag) is a command written between angle brackets (the less-than and greater-than symbols). In HTML, elements could be written with uppercase or lowercase text and it made no difference to most major browsers. Copy and paste all the code in the Code Sample to the right into a text editor like Text Wrangler (Mac) or Notepad++ (PC). Play with some additional headings, like h3, h4, to see how they work and change the bgcolor value. This will insert an image into the file named a€?imagename.jpga€? that exists in the same folder as the page you are working on.
Use the background attribute of the body element to use a background image for an entire page.
You can make your own background images (in Photoshop, etc.) or you can find images to use as backgrounds all over the Web. This should always be an absolute link reference, meaning the specific location is used as the attribute value. This is considered a relative link reference, because it refers to the location of the file as it relates to the current file.
You can also include directory structure in the link reference, if the file is not in the same directory as the page with the link.
Remember, use absolute references for links to other sites and relative references for links in your own site. Mailto links aren't as popular as they once were, as people now use Web-based email services like Gmail, but you still sometimes see them on Web pages.
TYPE - for unordered lists, numbers are the default, but you can use an A for Capital letters, a for lower case, I for Uppercase Roman Numerals and i for lowercase Roman. You can create navigation on a template page (your first page), before you even create the other pages.
Add navigation to your site using the unordered list method and make at least two additional pages, with content. The code above includes everything we have covered in this tutorial - Basic Elements, Image, Links, Lists, Tables and Navigation.
The code above is fully commented to make it helpful to find sections of the site or for other coders who will work on it later.
You might also have server space via other means, a school or work account, so check out your options.
I also shared examples of landing pages I liked so that RightBanners guys can have an idea of my style.
The free landing page template can be used in free or commercial websites with no attributions. After directing your domain name to your website (which is located on your web host’s server), you are now all set to design your web pages.

The example that I will show below is a very simple HTML code which includes texts and tags for formatting the document.
These keywords are all HTML tags, and as you can see Notepad++ rendered it with color blue. No matter how simple our example above is, it is an actual web page which contains data and is accessible over the Internet.
A lot of web hosting service providers have cPanels installed on their web servers, visit cPanel’s to see how it actually looks like.
What happens is that, if you type your domain name on your web browser, the web browser then connects to the Internet and finds your web host servers which are associated with your domain name. The web page should normally load and you should see the same web page that you have tested offline like the image above. Even if you aren't going to be coding websites by hand, you might need to tweak something in a content management system, like Wordpress, or resolve a simple coding issue in a project site you are managing. A Web browser reads the HTML file and interprets the elements, thus presenting the information in the way the Web designer intended. It functions in the same manner as previous versions, but adds semantic tags, rich media and animation features and works with CSS3. If you happen to be copying html from another document, always be sure you aren't copying rich text quotation marks or apostrophes. In most cases, you close the element after the text that you are marking up, as in the use of above.
Nothing within the head tag actually shows up on page, but this is where designers can store information about the title or special search terms associated with the page. This title does not show up on the page itself, but in the top title bar or tab of the browser. If the image is in or will be in a different folder than the page, the folder path will have to be included in the file reference. The img element is another standalone element, because it does not wrap around content to mark it up. To save an image from the Web, simply hold down the right click or ctrl-click on the image or background and use the Save command.
As the novelty has worn off, most designers prefer to use black text on white backgrounds (easier to read). When you are typing, open and close tags as you go, rather than simply copying the code or typing the file in a linear manner from top to bottom. They are the most unique feature of the Web that can't easily be replicated in print or broadcast.
If you plan to use one, make sure you include the email address as the link text so it can be easily copied and pasted into a Web-based mail program. To do that, you have to consider how the user is going to navigate through the pages of your site.
Most navigation bars are located near the top of the page, so it is the first thing that a user sees. These do not affect the appearance of the site, but provide code delineation or instructions for the designer or others who may be working on the page.
You should now have an understanding of the basic elements and attributes and how to use them on a page.
If you are looking for a landing page or banner design service, you should definitely give them a try.
Just for a recap, an HTML document is a text file with formatting instructions of HTML tags. This text editor is able to recognize the programming language that is being used on a certain file through its filename extension (e.g. On your code editor type the text exactly as shown below, I used Notepad++ on this example.
The filename should be named “index” because this is the first file that the web server will load when your website visitors visit you website. As you might have thought, it takes time and effort to “manually” create a lot of web pages for your website.
They will not render correctly in the browser and are likely to cause problems in the code.
It is considered consistent coding style to use lowercase for html elements in HTML5 and is the standard that most Web developers now use. The attribute bgcolor can be used within the body tag to change the background color of the page. Use headings as you would an outline, giving the smallest number to the item of the top importance and so on.
Next you'll learn to add images, links, lists and tables, and in the next lesson you'll learn to apply styles with CSS. Use the width attribute to adjust your image size, if it is too large, but don't try to make it larger than the original quality. Links allow the user to be whisked to another part of the Web for more information, to another page on the same site or to somewhere else on the web.
In the early days of Web design, designers used the table feature to establish a grid for layout. You already know how to make links, so you will use internal links - links to pages on your own site - to provide a way for users to get around your site. The other pages should include the name of the site and the name of the page - for example, Cindy Royal - About, Cindy Royal - Links, etc.

For consistency, name files without spaces or capital letters, and this will help in troubleshooting. We are laying the foundation for correct syntax and code structuring, and we'll move on to CSS in the next series of lessons. You should pay attention to developments in HTML to know which tags are deprecated and what replaces their functionality. Recent versions of HTML now allow the designer to specify font sizes and styles, given that the user has those fonts installed on their machine. This allows the designer to create a style and have it apply globally to all pages on a Web site. You can use an FTP client like Fetch or Filezilla or you can try a browser plugin like Fire-FTP for Firefox. The location of a file matters when it is being accessed by another file, so this will assure that your links and images function properly.
We'll have a few more HTML elements to add after we learn a little about about styling with CSS in the next tutorial. Once you have learned these steps, you can do it all over again and become familiar with the process, and learn more advance techniques in the future.
Try to test and debug your codes offline by using debuggers, or use your web browser instead. Customizations, design and operation of a web page can be enhanced by using commonly used website development scripts such as JavaScript and CSS (CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheet, script to design and give style to a web page). An example website with massive amount of web pages is Wikipedia, which has millions of web pages served around the world. You will use elements or tags to "mark up" text on the page, so the browser knows how to display it. You'll want to follow along with the code on your own and spend some time modifying it until you understand all the elements and attributes. Programs like Dreamweaver also create HTML, but it's good to learn how to hand-code from the start, so you can modify existing code or customize a template. You can use the six-character hexidecimal code (see the websites that provide HTML Color Codes) or you can use a limited number of words to describe color, i.e.
When you upload the file to the Web, the user simply has to type the domain name into the browser to get to the home page of your site.
You should see the file render with the title, background color and heading and paragraph formats.
You can use images from a digital camera, create your own images in a graphic design program, scan photos or images or use images from other Web sites (but not copyrighted images). We'll be working with various methods for using background images in smaller sections of pages and developing interesting layouts with CSS. Be sure to close your element with , so the rest of your page is not highlighted as a link. For the internal link, you will have to make a page with that name to be able to see it working.
But now, with the use of CSS, we have much more powerful, consistent and responsive ways to create a Web page layout. If any of your elements aren't displaying properly in the file you have created, troubleshoot them by checking each element carefully, making sure you used proper spelling, used angle brackets and quotation marks properly and closed any tag you opened. There are many Web hosts that all have different features and pricing models, so review a few before you purchase one. And some Web hosts, like Bluehost, have file management tools as part of their control panel. The folder on the server should resemble the file structure you are used to seeing in the Finder on your computer. Remember that a website is a collection of related web pages located on a server which is accessible over the Internet through a URL. Double click the index.html file, and if it is associated with your web browser, it should load normally and look like the image shown below.
Additional programming and scripting languages that are used in web development are PHP, Perl, Java ASP and so on will not be covered here, these languages are introduced for you to have an idea and learn them from other resources. Other examples are blogs such as Mashable, Engadget, TechCrunch and our own BlogsDB’s blog.
CSS (Cascading Stylesheets) provides consistent design techniques and JavaScript can add interactivity. Notice the structure of the page, the opening html element, the head and body sections, the use of the bgcolor attribute and the way that all elements are closed around the content it modifies. Most hosts provide both the Web hosting (server space) and domain registration, although these are separate processes. Not all of these pages are really hand coded in HTML; these pages were actually generated by a program residing on our web server. This site doesn't cover graphic software packages, but there are many good tutorials across the Web on using Photoshop and Illustrator. Most of the blogs and websites on the web are already using community-contributed scripts such as WordPress, Drupal or Joomla. Or if you want to have a quick start, you can check our tutorial on how to install WordPress on your website.
