Share This Article:The San Diego County Fair is closed Monday and Tuesday, but it’s a good time to look into discounts on admission. Military members, teachers, laid-off workers and children are among groups that can get free admission and discount rates. People who have been unemployed in the past 12 months and one guest can attend the fair free. Military discounts are not available at the Fair admission gate, and are subject to availability at the base ticket offices.
Military discount tickets are available for purchase on base only to the following customers with appropriate Military ID: active duty, dependents, reservists, retirees and DoD employees.
Mission Federal Credit Union is offering all educators two free admissions to the fair on two Fridays, June 19 and 26. All employees of public or private schools, K-12, colleges and universities are eligible, no matter where the schools are located. The theme for the fair is “A Fair to Remember, A Celebration of World’s Fairs and Balboa Park,” and commemorates the centennial anniversary of the 1915 Panama – California Exposition held in Balboa Park. Students 12 and younger who read 10 books can complete the Reading Certificate and receive free admission to the fair.

During the fair, shuttles transport bus and train passengers from the Solana Beach train station to the Fair’s West Gate (you must present a train or bus ticket to board the shuttle). Come and enjoy authentic German food, a great selection of German beers, traditional folk dancing performances, compete in numerous games and contests, check out vendor and craft booths, and treat the kids to their own Kids’ Zone. For the rest of the afternoon, the stages heat up with world-class acts and the park becomes a celebration unlike any other!
In addition to the re-enactment, the festival is filled with educational activities, cultural demonstrations and exciting folkloric performances that bring to life the traditions of the Native American, Mexican, Portuguese and Spanish cultures that are part of the Age of Exploration. While not at work, I enjoy biking, running, soccer, bocce ball, craft brew (I hope to make a batch of home brew one day), reading, movies, and a video game here and there. Then I would pack the bicycle panniers with a picnic lunch for the wife and I and we would ride over to Mission Trails for some trail riding and then a lovely lunch under the shade by the river.
