VANCOUVER -- Midfield dynamo Diana Matheson, sidelined by a serious knee injury last October, has made Canada's 23-woman roster for this summer's World Cup. The 166-cap veteran, whose work ethic and passing help Canada unlock defences, tore her anterior cruciate ligament in a 3-0 friendly loss to Japan.
Matheson walked gingerly down the stairs at Monday's announcement, taking a shorter route than her teammates. Matheson, who stands just a half-inch over five feet, had knee surgery to repair torn cartilage in her right knee in November 2011.
Defender Lauren Sesselmann, who tore up her knee in February 2014, has already returned to action and is also on the roster. Talismanic forward Christine Sinclair, with 222 caps and 153 international goals, will again serve as captain.
The others are Matheson, fullback Rhian Wilkinson (163), midfielder Sophie Schmidt (131) and goalkeepers Karina LeBlanc (110) and Erin McLeod (104).
They form the spine of a team that went from dead last at the 2011 World Cup to the medal podium at the 2012 Olympics in London. The made-for-TV roster announcement took place in the rain at downtown Vancouver's Robson Square against a backdrop of screaming, flag-waving young girls. With 25 players including Matheson in residency, there were not many roster decisions to make. Janine Beckie, a 20-year-old forward with five caps, and Rebecca Quinn, a 19-year-old defender with nine caps, will likely be part of a group of some six alternates on standby. Forward Melissa Tancredi (99 caps), midfielders Kaylyn Kyle (95) and Desiree Scott (89), and defenders Carmelina Moscato (91), Zurrer (82) and Gayle (81) add experience and moxy to the Canadian squad. Only one player -- 28-year-old midfielder Selenia Iacchelli -- has less than 10 caps (with four appearances). Young talent includes 17-year-old Jessie Fleming, a midfielder with exquisite touch, and 19-year-old Kadeisha Buchanan, a hard-nosed centre back. For Fleming, who has 15 caps, it's her third FIFA world competition since March 2014 when she captained Canada at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2014.
Now that the roster has been announced, the Canadian women can now look forward to 10 days off -- their last break until their World Cup campaign ends. They return to the Toronto area May 21 to prepare for their final friendly on May 29 against England in Hamilton. The 24-team World Cup, which wraps up July 5 in Vancouver, will also see games in Winnipeg, Ottawa and Moncton.
Members of the Canadian national women's soccer team celebrate after the roster for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup was announced, in Vancouver, on Monday April 27, 2015. Slight correction: Boston Breakers are playing at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, not Harvard Stadium.
It first said Dilboy Stadium on their Wikipedia page, then it said Harvard Stadium for like around 2 weeks .
A spot at Rio 2016 is on the line for the Canadian Women’s National Team today as they face Costa Rica in the semi-final of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Houston, Texas. Led by captain Christine Sinclair, the 11th ranked Canadian team should be considered heavy favourites against 34th ranked Costa Rica. Canada has rolled through the qualifying tournament up to this point, defeating Guyana 5-0, Trinidad and Tobago 6-0, and Guatemala 10-0.
Costa Rica has had much tougher competition so far, losing to the powerhouse Americans 5-0, beating Puerto Rico 9-0, and narrowly beating Mexico 2-1. Canada has qualified for the Olympics in women’s soccer twice before, finishing in 8th place in 2008 and winning bronze in 2012.

Soccer Nova Scotia provincial player Teni Akindoju was the only Atlantic Canadian to attend the U-13 to U-15 talent ID camp, part of the Women’s National EXCEL Program in Vaughn, ON earlier in June. Canada’s Women’s U-17 Team Head Coach Bev Priestman called up 33 players to take part in a U-13 to U-15 talent ID camp, part of the Women’s National EXCEL Program presented by Bell, that wrapped up on Tuesday 17 June in Vaughan, ON. This initial identification camp was the start of the Women’s National EXCEL phase one for players born in 1999, 2000, and 2001. As part of Canada’s Women’s EXCEL Program, the Canada Soccer Women’s National EXCEL Program, presented by Bell, brings together the best with the best at the national level.

Everyone, pardon me for being totally off-topic, I want to bring attention to this problem that we are having in New Hampshire.

The recovery time was longer than expected but she recovered to play in the 2012 Olympics, scoring the stoppage-time goal that beat France in the bronze-medal match.
Defenders Marie-Eve Nault played an important role after being called in when Robyn Gayle and Emily Zurrer were injured at the Olympics. The top two teams in the tournament will qualify for the Olympics, making this a do-or-die match.
Costa Rica participated at the Women’s World Cup last summer and were competitive in every game, finishing with no wins, two ties, and one loss.
If they qualify it will likely be the last chance for Burnaby’s Christine Sinclair, who turns 33 this year, to play in the Olympic Games. The group arrived into camp on Friday 13 June and had five solid days of training as the players look to find their way into Canada’s entry in the U-15 Women’s CONCACAF Championship that takes place in the Cayman Islands in August. Focus has been placed on assessing the players initially identified across Canada and challenging their technical and tactical qualities. Operating in six-year cycles across the U-14 to U-17 and U-18 to U-20 age groups, it is designed to deliver an aligned talent structure and system that progresses more top players to Canada’s Women’s National Team, more often. One big difference this time is that the soccer federations of the USA and Canada (the USSF and the CSA), and the futbol federation of Mexico (the FMF) wil be paying the salaries of the players they have placed in the allocation draft. Why does McLeod continue to get the starts over Leblanc?Very good question about the GK situation. Why does McLeod continue to get the starts over Leblanc? This confused me also, did Le Blanc not start most of the lead up games?
I happily live in the states on my green card but would never ever get US citizenship. At least you have a green card.

Dropping her for some friendlies and learning to play without her, isn't a move I would be against. I definately think Sinclair was carrying a slight injury, she appeared to have a slight limp at times and had tape on the back of her left ankle.
At the World Cup, she'll be pushing 34, playing a physically demanding brand of football.
She pings hard for me as well as Sophie Schmidt even though she is from the bible belt of Canada.
When I heard she was Canada's soccer star and saw her, I have to say I was a bit surprised. And the Canadian women have scored one goal or less in nine of their last 15 matches, during which time they went 8-5-2 with all five losses coming to Tier 1 opposition -- although they did tie the U.S. Some players on USWNT look a little flabby to me, hah, but I wonder what kind of fitness regime Canada's team has. The lower-left-hand corner of the map page shows the whole list of players grouped by their new pro teams. I get making overhauls, because our current veteran group isn't good enough, but lets not be silly.Whaaat?
I have included 16 player-photos – 2 player photos per team for each of the 8 NWSL teams.
I think Tancredi is missed considerably, her and Sincy have such great chemistry and no-one has really filled her role.I think Erin made some great saves, especially towards the end and D-Math was excellent as always.
In deciding on which 2 players per team I would showcase via the photos, I consulted a few articles on the NWSL allocation draft including the article linked to right below (by Richard Farley).
I think the Mexico game showed that we have a little work to do in gelling with new formations and new subs (miss Krieger, sniff) but I feel really good about our chances. Our defense was actually quite good for both games, in large parts because of those two and McLeod's heroics. It would be nice to have Tanc for that game even if she only plays a half and is not as fit as she would normally be. That way we can field the youngest and most inexperienced team the Women's World Cup has ever seen. Hopefully playing regularly in the league will help the other vets who seem to be out of gas. Rhian is a decent human being, and I get that Herdman likes using her because she run those deep balls in, but holy hell has she looked slow and miserable. Honestly, the only way you conceive of cutting Sinclair is if her game regresses to the point that she can no longer play. Generally, I love Canada as a country and a people, but I really hated those SportsNet commentators and then the douchey Canadians who came into the USWNT and threw tantrums because we made fun of the SportsNet commentators and derailed the thread. And even if she regresses, she'll still likely be the best forward on the team, unless her long loss sister Kristin Sinclair comes along. Her physical brand of play is punishing on the body so maybe not playing this year will prolong her career. We luck out a little but that Germany, right on our heels is out of the Olympics, but as we know, anything can happen.
