When New York–based graphic designers and long-time friends Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh found themselves single at the same time, they decided to try an experiment.
Note: 40 Days of Dating has a special binding that allows it to open very flat by attaching the endpapers to the inside covers.
Jessica Walsh is a designer, art director, and partner in the New York–based design firm Sagmeister and Walsh. Besides always being there for me as a friend, her confidence and unparalleled courage to do what she wants is very inspiring. We share a mutual interest in creating work that connects with people and starts dialogues and has depth to it beyond the formal and visual. Tim is easily one of my favourite creatives because of the emotion and humour in his writing and work. Bobby and Fiona Burrage’s relationship started off as one of designer and account director, but developed into husband and wife, and parents of a little three-year-old Burrage. The relationship between a producer and a creative isn’t always plain sailing, but imagine if that relationship extended outside of work hours and into a marriage? With Valentine’s Day almost upon us we’ve taken a break from making space for the swarms of cards we’re pretty sure we’re going to receive to round up the best of the creative world’s romantic ideas. Three-way creative powerhouse Nous Vous formed in Leeds in 2006, and the trio’s six legs belong to designers, artists and illustrators Jay Cover, Nicolas Burrows and William Edmonds.
The old adage says that it takes 40 days to change a habit—could the same be said for love?
Timothy Goodman is a designer, illustrator, and art director based in New York City; he runs his own studio.
We’re both interested in merging our personal and professional lives more by using our tools as designers to have larger dialogues with all kinds of people.

It was an emotional rollercoaster going through this experiment and I could have only done it with Tim as he’s not only my creative partner but one of my best friends. We’re not interested in creating design or illustration, we see design as a tool like any other (writing, film making etc.) that can be used to enhance storytelling, emotional expression, and content creation. He challenges me to think about things from a very different perspective from my own which makes our work together better. So sometimes he drives me absolutely nuts (and vice versa) and we can fight over ridiculous things. They met when Bobby hired Fiona at his Norwich-based agency The Click, and the pair has since launched their own graphic design-led lifestyle brand, Nor-Folk.
Proving that it’s not all hardship and arguing over schedules, Ashley and Michael Kohler, producer and sound designer receptively, are a husband and wife duo that work together at US animation studio Awesome Incorporated and Bluetube, a music and sound company. Due to an overwhelming (and very sweet) response to our First Dates for those who create feature, we’ve decided to keep the love going for a few more days this week.
The collective has made a name for itself through a colourful and community-minded approach to creativity, born from close personal friendships and making things fun. We meet the lovely duo Studio Swine, the Anglo-Japanese design studio formed of architect Azusa Murakami and artist Alexander Groves. So they agreed to date each other for 40 days, record their experiences in questionnaires, photographs, videos, texts, and artworks, and post the material on a website they would create for this purpose.
Walsh and Goodman have each won awards for their work from the Type Directors Club, Art Directors Club, SPD, Print, and Graphis.
We came up with 40 Days of Dating rather abruptly, not as a design project, but because we had a real question about our relationship problems and wanted to help each other. We started chatting quite often online, and after we started hanging out with a group of friends from the design world quite often.

Working on that project we realised we had different skill-sets and we really pushed each other to make interesting things through the combination of those skill sets. Probably because we know we can say anything and be 100% honest and unfiltered with each other. Here they are, talking about the ups and downs of living together, parenting together and working together.
Today we hear from partners in creativity, and also in lurve, James and Rachael Gilbert-Burns. We caught up with Nicolas and Jay to talk about how their relationship works, and where it’s going next.
What began as a small experiment between two friends became an Internet sensation, drawing 5 million unique (and obsessed) visitors from around the globe to their site and their story since it was launched in July 2013. After an informal conversation on email, I Facebooked her and then I tried to stir up more casual conversation.
From there, I think it worked out because we’re both so willing to be audacious and personal with the work. We challenge the hell out of each other and we’re brutally honest and sometimes we want to kill each other.
40 Days of Dating: An Experiment is a beautifully designed, expanded look at the experiment and the results, including a great deal of material that never made it onto the site, such as who they were as friends and individuals before the 40 days and who they have become since.
